National Honors Society???

Published

Have you received an invitation to participate in a National HOnors societies? If so, what are your thoughts about them? Is it reasonable to think that one can maintain a 3.0 through nursing?

I will be working PT but I have gotten all my co and pre-req's out of the way.

Is it worth it? They say there can be a lot of scholarship money, both now and when I decide to go get my BSN. Also maybe on resumes?

What is your experience/thoughts?

I just recently got an invitation in the mail to join Phi Theta Kappa. It looks good on your diploma and transcripts, and you get to wear the nifty doo-dads at graduation. You also have access to a bunch of scholarships as a member. There is no required time commitment, but you have to maintain a 3.3 GPA to remain a member. I joined. It made me feel good. :)

I also just got an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa, only our chapter requires a 3.5 GPA.

It is $75 to join, but they say you get access to some good scholarships. I think someone posted a message several months ago that they got a scholarship thru Phi Theta Kappa.

I haven't decided, as $75 seems like a lot of money, but I will probably go ahead and join.

I was a member of Gamma Beta Phi while I attended college. It does look good on transcripts and resumes and helps with scholarships. As far as maintaining a 3.0, I believe that you can do anything that you set your mind to. Good luck to you!

I just joined too, mainly for the scholarships. Every school is different with the GPA to maintain and joining fee. At my school, you have to maintain a 3.0 and to join is $55.

I should get the invite after this quarter (I'll have enough credits under my belt by then. I've got a 4.0 currently overall.) and I plan on joining. Some folks told me that they would wait until they were about to graduate before joining just in case they couldn't hold onto a good enough gpa, but frankly, I see it as something to continue to motivate me through school.

Besides, I could use a scholarship too! ;)

Phi Theta here too. We have to maintain3.5 and $55 to join. I have been back in school for almost 4 years, I will graduate with my RN in March. I work full-time, have 3 kids, and a granddaughter and have a gpa of 3.9 It can be done!!!! It does look good on a resume too. Most of the people in my class are happy just to scrape by with the mandatory "C" but, I have a little more motivation than that.....Good Luck to you....Peace

Thanks everyone :)

I appreciate your feedback. It seems to me that it will be money well spent. And who couldn't use a couple of scholarships to supplement the loans

Hey, I spent the $65 to join PTK and it was the best money ever spent! I qualified for a half price tuition waiver at my private university so the $65 could turn into over $15000! I have to keep a 3.25 gpa and I'm a little nervous about that this semester, but even if I don't make it, it will still have paid $7000 for this year! I say go for it... there's not much to lose!

If I do qualify, I will join any honor societies I can... it feels good! I'm not a grades freak (see other thread), but I'm such a different student now than when I was younger... I'm glad to see it pay off!

I got my letter from PTK as well and I think it can't hurt to have that on your transcript!

I am hoping and praying that I maintain a 3.0 (actually I wouldn't mind a 4.0! :) ) GPA when I begin my nursing classes! *gets on her knees and begins to pray*
