My Family can't see me as a Nurse but it's my dream

Published

I have always had a dream of being a nurse but life happens and I ended up with an associates in Political Science and a job in hospitality. I am great at my job but I know where I want to be. I believe in myself and I know I can do I just want my family to see the same for me. It's like they only feel I can just do customer service and write ( I am a published author) but I am not a one trick pony. How do I get them to see and believe?

If you are a self-sufficient adult, it doesn't matter what your family thinks. If you want to go to nursing school, then do so.

Become a nurse. That should convince them.

I agree with the other posters -- this is your life, this is your dream. Family support would be nice, but at the end of the day, you are the one that'll step into nursing school and make it happen!

After all, what often turns out to be the case is that they will see how serious you are and how hard you are working towards your goal and they will come around eventually. Therefore, I encourage you to be steadfast in your pursuit and make it happen with the power of your determination!

You are already making positive strides in the right direction. Allnurses seems to be a neutral place to vent and an excellent place to get good supportive encouragement from people who have already conquered other 'like'mountains of opposition. You are not in this alone. I know how offensive it feels when people are in such deep denial of the more than blatantly obvious knowledge you have. Your love for medicine is like the adage " You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it". God sets the solitary in a family. Don't be surprised or should I say welcome the love of new friends who may become something like a surrogate family. Good luck. I'm furthering my education and I welcome supportive prayers, love, information, and financial support in this lifetime. 👩*❤️*👩

It isn't up to your family. It's up to you. Make up your mind and do what you want to do.

My mom told me I would never be able to do it. It was fun to prove her wrong. :cheeky: As others have pointed out, this is your life.

I too have a non nursing bachelors and am in nursing school right now. In my family's case, there is/was this attitude that nursing was "beneath me" somehow. Nursing has been my dream since I was a little girl but they always discouraged it and said it was a "tech school" kind of job and I should be doing something "better." Nursing school is ten times harder than my silly bachelors and definitely takes brains and skill. I only wish I would have followed my heart earlier and started out in nursing. Good luck to you and follow your dreams!

I'm in the same boat. My mom tells me that because I usually have my room kind of messy, I'm not cut out to help people. I'm 28 :/
