I had a 400 lb. patient who had an abscess on the inner thigh. It was hardened with no visible head or drainage when I saw it, and I thought it would definitely need to be I&D'd before anything would drain. Not true. I was called to the room a couple hours later when the patient was screaming into the call button "IT BUSTED!" I entered the room to the foulest smelling stench I have ever laid my senses on (with the exception of death). It was brownish red and smelled a lot like a GI bleed, but worse. But most of it was out of the patient and on the floor, because the next day when they did do an I&D there was nothing left of the abscess.

Oh, BTW, I don't get grossed out easily. I love popping, shooting, and purulent ooze, but the odor of this this was overpowering in the small room. When the doc came in a few minutes later, he immediately came out and got a mask!

Asking nurses what they find disgusting - that's not something for the fainthearted.

Why would a doctor ask how a couple has sex? A little inappropriate don't you think? That entire story was deeply disturbing from start to finish.

In the context of the OP, it wasn't appropriate.

If someone has a sore throat or rectal pain, it might be appropriate. Seeing more and more cases where what was thought to be strep throat might actually be gonorrhea. YECH.

And for some reason I couldn't quote it, but the post about popping/smushing things- I am the same way. I'm also a peelie (I want to peel sunburns). Gross, but therapeutic.

Worst was actually a home bound patient who i cared for in the auspices of my firefighter life. This poor woman was too heavy to be mobile and would complain to her family about every 2 or 3 months that she was having chest pain and needed to go to the hopital. Because of her size, the fire dept would get called to help the ambulance drivers. It was bad enough that she lived on a mattress on the floor of the living room and that noone helped her with toileting so the mattress was beyond disgusting but the lady was covered in skin ulcerations due to lying all day in her own waste. During one of our assistance calls, she had an abcess that burst just as we were attempting to life her, promptly soaking one of my guys. He ran out of the room. She was mortified. I think what diisgusted me most was the way her family cared for her. I honsetly think the only reason she called us was to go to the hospital to get cleaned up and get some decent care.

We had a 200kg female pt who came out of surgery for debridment of a large abdominal wound. She'd had a ventral hernia repair that got infected and dehisced. The surgeon had debrided the wound and packed it with gauze, leaving it open and oozing. After about 20 minutes we called the surgeon because of a constant stream of serosanguinous discharge from the wound. She was losing fluid faster than the IV was replacing it.

I assisted the surgeon while he unpacked the wound and rooted around in it with both hands. Seriously, he had both hands in her belly up to his wrists. (with gloves on of course) I was opening and passing sterile 4x4s to him when another nurse told me to look down. Uggg, the sheet on her stretcher had become saturated and fluid was dripping off it like rain off a roof, right onto our shoes. There was nothing to do then but finish repacking her. When we were done I gave my shoes a superclean with Blueskies. I retired those shoes at the end of my shift.

Sounds like abuse to me.

I'm no weenie. I've seen & smelled gas gangrene and untreated cancerous lesions, infected wounds, all kinds of stinky stuff.

But..last night we had a pt w/c-diff. Now, I'm no stranger to c-diff, and usually I can clean it up and go have lunch afterwords. However, I nearly puked while cleaning up this lady last night. I have never smelled such a foul odor coming from the human body. It even outstank the gas gangrene, no small feat. It outstank a GI bleed, and thats pretty much as stinky as it can get.

I was very glad when she went upstairs.

Yeah - it was reported to the police on scene and an investigation was done. She would not file a complaint, would not accept any help or placement into the county skilled nursing facility. It was a sad situation up until the day she died.

I used to take care of a woman thaat came in all the time for a wide variety of problems. She weighed close to 600 lbs. She lived with a house full of men around a dozen or so. One time she came in with a raging infection within the folds of her abdominal fat. the first time we debrided it I thought I was going to pass out from the smell. She had several abcessed areas on her abdomen. and we kept finding big wooden splinters in these spots. Come to find out ALL of the men that lived with her were having sex with her and would use a 2x4 board to push up the folds so they could have sex.

We also found all kinds of food and even a remote to the tv. This poor woman finally died several yrs ago.

this story doesn't even qualify as disgusting.

however, it has to be one of the saddest stories i've ever read.

may she have found eternal love and peace.

Ugh, and I thought it was gross when we had a skinny little baby daddy volunteer the info that to *ahem* reach his g/f's nether regions, they had a broom at the bedside for the same purpose :barf02:
