1 month in and students already quitting

Published

Hi,

I am attending a diploma nursing school in Pittsburgh. We are just taking our pre-nursing classes (microbiology, nutrition). We have only had 1 quiz and took our first exam yesterday. We started out with 51 students. We are now down to 41. Is this normal for so many to drop out before it even starts? :uhoh21:

This just concerns me because I could not imagine giving up that quick. Maybe I am just to stubborn to quit.

In my AP class there are approximately 410 students and 60 ended up dropping out. On the first day of class, it was so jammed packed and as the year progress, there were like 20 students (out of 410!!!) scattered around the lecture hall and some were sleeping! I was a trooper and stuck it out till the end.

OK, heres an update,

We are in the beginning of the 3rd semester of 12. From 51 we are now down to 37. :uhoh21:

We had 7 people fail A&P I

Goodness, that is a big OUCH.

Okay, how's this? In my A&P 1 lecture class, we started with 28 and ended with 10! Pretty much same story with the lab (different instructor). Granted they were online classes which are supposed to be harder. I asked my instructor about the drop out rate and she said it was normal for A&P 1, although the online classes tend to be 10-20% higher than traditional classes.

I don't think there were many drop outs in my psyche class.

We had a huge drop out rate in my A+P 1 class. It's the last week of class before finals now and of 50 students there are 18 left in class. YES 18 LEFT IN CLASS. Honestly I think the majority dropped b/c of grades because after the "withdrawal" date the class just dissipated. I know of a few who had to drop out for personal reasons...I feel for them...it's not a course I would like to have to repeat if I had the choice.

Why are so many people failing/dropping anatomy?? It's so easy. Just memorize the material. No real concept or logic to it, just memorize it. I guess I just thought it was easy.

I see it in my school like the newest fashion style. For example, in my Chemistry class 55 students started the class (16 week course) 3 hour long twice a week.

Anyhow, by the end of the second week we were down to about 45. Subsequently, the numbers fell. Peole could not handle it......it was too difficult, did not like it, were not ready for the intense course, etc. etc....

Bottom line is that only 10 stayed and only 4 passed :stone !!

The farther into the program you go the more that drop out. But then again I am convinced that they "wee" many of the students out so that we maintain a waiting list free program

In my school this is normal. I hear that from other schools as well.

I agree with you in my school it is the same. All the Gen Ed courses maintain the class size. But the sciences are brutal.

It varies and depends from teacher to teacher. The same thing goes for schools. Some schools seem easier while others a bit more difficult. That is why we cannot judge and say such and such is easy. You can only speak for your school/instructor but not others. Wish all of the programs, schools and curriculums were the same :)

I would not agree with you on that one. What you are saying is not the best approach to anatomy. Can you say you know stuff after the class has ended? The only goal I had in that class is to learn and understand how things work, and for me, anatomy is very logical. Yes, high grades are rewarding but it is the feeling that you have when you hear someone talking about muscles and you say to yourself: hey I know that!

Just my 2c.

I disagree. There's still a lot of physiology and concept learning in an anatomy class.

I disagree as well. Memorizing everything is one thing...applying it by critical thinking using that information is another. Since every school tests differently...there's really no way to put it in one basket. I found it easy but it IS a huge amount of coursework for just one class...and a lot of people whom I talked to that dropped out- just couldn't juggle the amount of time A+P was taking up in their schedules with their other courseload at the time.

totally agree with that. some schools even have their AP handouts.....not books and most students get A's.....and there are some professors who teach the material...but the test requires critical thinking, something you wouldnt expect when the professor just drones on and on and what the nehprons do...but come test day...
