1 month in and students already quitting

Hi,

I am attending a diploma nursing school in Pittsburgh. We are just taking our pre-nursing classes (microbiology, nutrition). We have only had 1 quiz and took our first exam yesterday. We started out with 51 students. We are now down to 41. Is this normal for so many to drop out before it even starts? :uhoh21:

This just concerns me because I could not imagine giving up that quick. Maybe I am just to stubborn to quit.

Hi and good luck in school! I am only a week into school and we have already had one drop out and 4 others already saying that they aren't going to be able to make our Saturday classes. Now granted we were all told different schedules from our admissions counselors, but still come on. In our orientation, our DON told us that at our school there is a 59% drop rate. I got worried too and asked her after orientation about it. She said it is VERY normal. Alot of people don't know wht they are getting into and they can't handle it with family, work, etc. etc. She even went on to tell me that when she was in nursing school, they started with 153 students and only 57 graduated. So from wht I have heard from her, my other instructors, and other nurses here, it is pretty normal.

In my first pre-req science class, two-thirds of the class was gone by the end of the semester. But, quite frankly, most of those people needed to go. They didn't want to study and weren't really committed to the program.

So, no, I wouldn't say this is unusual. You'll see a lot of people drop or flunk out along the way.

HECK YES I SEE THIS!

Examples:

First day of school, Dean of Nursing asked how many are in prenursing. We all raised our hands. She said, "...half of you won't finish your pre-reqs!"

A&P 1-

first week 28 people in class

week EIGHT 20 people...

We've been told that after the midterm (2 WEEKS!! EEEEKKK), there will be a mass exit because people can't cut the "B" requirement for nursing.

Not a pleasant thought but, it's not stopping me!

I came in to our A&P II class Friday and 8 people were missing from last week. The mid term is next week.

I haven't noticed a huge amount of people dropping out of my pre-req classes, although probably half of my psych and english classes are pre-nursing. I'm sure I'll see more of that when I get into A/P and Micro.

We lost a ton of people in A&P 1. We had our first lecture test tonight and half the class was missing. It is very strange how people just give up like that. I even mentioned it to my teacher and she said " this happens all the time, people don't realize how much work we do and most leave before the midterm"

I had my first victim to the pressure tonight in A&P.

This woman started balling saying this all is just unfair.

I should have said what is unfair is you taking up someone else whom is probably more qualified's seat.

BEGONE CRYBABY!!!! :rotfl:

j/k im really not that mean

This happens in all my classes; over half the people in my English class are gone and about a third in history and micro. My history and micro teachers told me that there will be a lot more drop after the first test, which is next week. Statistics in the only class that still has most of the original students.

Gee how discouraging. Same thing happened at my school. Just make sure you are one of the stronger students. It's going to be tuff but if this is what you really want to do there is nothing in this world that can bring you down! Keep your confidence and reach for the stars! :)

Well I guess I am one of these people you all are discussing. I was in an lpn program and had to leave a month into it which was not an easy thing to do. I am going back next year as a returning student and they are keeping my spot open for me. Just wanted to say that people sometimes have to leave for reasons beyond their control. They are not all crybabies and weaklings. Just my .02
