  1. Yeah, I see what you mean! I should have asked more questions before accepting but this is the first real job I got accepted for (what I mean is not a McDonald's job) and I was excited about it and accepted the job without thinking. Now it is biting me back. I just think that maybe I will decline the position because the manager of the 2nd job talked to me today and gave me a good indication that I would be hired there. It is a huge risk that I am taking but hopefully it will work out for me.
  2. Hey to all. I am a student graduating next month. I am having a huge dilemma in picking for my first job. I accepted a position at a huge hospital in my area and the ratio for nurses in med-surg is 5-6:1 depending on acuity and staffing, and I have three twelve hour shifts for scheduling. The pay is 27 dollars an hour and it seemed like an okay place. The drawbacks are that they do not have loan forgiveness and they only pay for the graduate school that they want you to attend. No choice to pick from. Now the university I go to has their own hospital and health system. I interviewed with them yesterday but I have not gotten a job offer from them. They have excellent (I mean, excellent) benefit, good pay, and they are a union. I also have done my clinicals there. I see how the nurses are there. They can be catty sometimes. The ratio is 6 to 1 nurse usually. I am there right now for my mentorship and it is fine with me. The orientation there is for six weeks as opposed to twelve for med-surg. Also they pay for graduate studies at the school I am at now. The only draw back is that they are only offering two twelve and two eight hour shifts due to the new contract for new nurses. The problem is that I have not gotten a job offer yet from them. The dilemma comes in when I called the hr manager at the first hospital where I got the offer from. Since I had accepted the offer a month ago, I just had some questions (like if I had a contract with them). She got really defensive and told me I had until monday to tell her for sure if I did want to stay with them. She told me that she did not want me to say yes now and then call back a month from now and say no. She said I would be burning bridges with them. I don't want that to happen but I also don't want to be with out a job. I really want the position at the second place since I know it well and they have the great benefits. Can you guys give me advice????
  3. My opinion is that if you could skip having a boyfriend, it would be better. BUT, it is possible to have a boyfriend while in nursing school. I am a junior in college now in the nursing program, and I have been with my boyfriend for four years. If a guy understands you and loves you, he will support you throughout your studies. And it is definitely possible to have fun and go out on dates while in school. I like to call it time management. If you make a plan to study on a certain day or hour, and stick with it, then you will have enough time to relax and have fun. I also am working part time while in school and go to church a couple times a week at night, and I have a boyfriend, so... it is possible! Now it is different, if you have children and a full time job and are going to school. IN that case, I would definitely stay single for the mean time and focus on school.
  4. I am going to be doing an externship at Thomas Jefferson University hospital this summer at the Liver and Renal Transplant unit. It is a med surg unit that has pre-op and post-op (stable) patients. If I like that unit, I hope that I can secure a position there after graduating. I maybe able to see patients that are on dialysis and I may feel more comfortable dealing with that population. After getting some experience in med surg, I do want to go into dialysis. Thanks for all your advice.
  5. Hello to all, I am a student nurse in my third year of college due to graduate next year in May 2008. I am thinking of going into a dialysis floor when I graduate but I would like to know if you guys would recommend going into a med surg the first year after graduating and then transferring to a dialysis unit? What kind of skills would I have to aquire before going to a dialysis floor? Thank you.
  6. Thanks so much everyone!! :balloons: :balloons: :balloons:
  7. Hey, everyone! I AM ECSTATIC!!!! I got into Thomas Jefferson Nursing School in Philadelphia, PA!!! I am sooo happy! I got in for their BSN program starting my Junior Year!!! I am starting thank God on Fall 2006. I just got to give all the glory and honor to God!
  8. I got a 99% on my first exam! It covered the endocrine and cardiovascular system! I studied my butt off, so I deserve it! Now we are going to cover the blood/circulatory system and the lympatic system! I hope to pass, the test is on Thursday. There was not a curve on the first exam and there were 80 questions so that there was more weight on the questions. There are 315 people in my class and 70 people failed the first test. It was hard! Wish me luck on my next exam! Bye!:balloons: :balloons: :p
  9. I think AP II is way harder than AP I. I am really nervous because on the 20th of this month is my first lecture test on the Endocrine and Cardiovascular system. Does anybody have any tips on memorizing all the glands that go with each of the hormones (ex. Norepinephrine for the adrenal medulla, or ADH for the hypothalumus)??? Can anyone give me tips on how to do well on this sequence of AP??? Please, please, please HELP!!!!
  10. Well at my school 12 credit hours is a blessing from heaven.I wish I could take 12 credits but I won't graduate in 4 years if I do. I feel that I am overexerting myself with 17 credits. Next semester I am taking 15 credits and even that feels overbearing. It is true, don't take more than you can handle.
  11. OMG!!!!! My professor just posted our grades on Blackboard and I got an..... A-!!!!!!!!! 90% I just cannot believe it!!!! 70 people failed the course :o ... But anyway, back to the great news!!!! I barely made it, I had an 89% average overall, but I got a 92% on my last lecture and a 50/50 on my last Lab to give me that one little measly point that makes a difference between an A and a B. I am so happy :balloons: :Melody: :Melody: :Melody: :) :) :) :) :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
  12. In my AP class there are approximately 410 students and 60 ended up dropping out. On the first day of class, it was so jammed packed and as the year progress, there were like 20 students (out of 410!!!) scattered around the lecture hall and some were sleeping! I was a trooper and stuck it out till the end.
  13. Well, I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and I have some nursing schools around here. The most known is the University of Pennsylvania's Nursing school and that is a really hard nursing program to get into (well, it is an Ivy League school). We also have Thomas Jefferson Nursing School and Holy Family College Nursing school. I am currently attending Temple University but I am still completing my pre-reqs but from what I hear, Temple's Nursing School is really competitive to get into but it is great because right across the street from the Nursing school is Temple University Hospital and you get to do your clinicals there. I hear that many sophomores got rejected but it was mostly because they did not have any community service. They are really into that and having top notch grades. So.... that is about it:balloons:
  14. Tell me about it! I wish you luck on your two tests! I guess you have more pressure than me!!! But if we look on the bright side, at least we made it to the end of the road and did not give up on the class. Good Luck~:) :) :)
  15. Hey guys! Well, I am kinda nervous. Tommorrow is my final lecture exam and boy am I super nervous. I am trying to get an A in the class and right now my average is an 89% B+. This is a breakdown of my grades: Lec 1: 79% (really affected me) Lab 1: 48/55 Lec 2: 87% Lab 2: 40/55 Lec 3: 91% Lab 3: 43/55 Lec 4: 99% (Yeah!!!:) ) Lab 4: ????? (Don't know yet) Lec 5: Tommorrow! I hope I do well!!!!! It has been a very tough semester. I hope I come out alive tommorrow. LOL. I know all you must feel the pressure as well. I hope you all do well on your finals!!!:) :) Edited to say that Lecture exams are 75% of the grade and Labs are only 25% because in my school, Lecture is 3 credit hours and Lab is only 1 credit hour. NO FAIR!!!:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :stone
