Missouri hospital offers nursing students $5K sign-on bonuses

Hmm...seems to me they're suffering from a nursing shortage. They certainly don't offer sign-on bonuses to new grads when they have a glut of graduate nurses from which to choose.

I believe you're right. To me, a sign-on bonus screams "We have no help and we need you" OR "We can't keep help and we need you". I've been in both situations.

Boy howdy, they must have some serious problems there to be willing to pay bonuses for new grads.

It's almost like the old days when I entered the nursing workforce (2006) - they were offering sign-on bonuses and relocation reimbursement to new grads left and right.

Anyone else have the lyrics to hotel California running through their head? Has anyone ever accepted a sign on bonus and had a good experience at that place? Sign on bonuses scream "run away!" To me.

I've never taken a job with a sign-on bonus; call me a cynic (many people do), but they have always "scream(ed) 'run away!'" to me from the get-go.

Yes, I have. My first nursing position in 2006.

Gosh, I feel like some places just can't win for losing. In my other long thread about how the nursing shortage is alive and well in many smaller communities, everyone said "If you offer a sign-on bonus or other incentives to come to your rural community, you might get some more nurses!" Now people are saying "Don't take a job there if they're offering a sign-on bonus; it's a red flag!!" wth

So what's the answer, then?

My hospital was offering $10,000 sign on bonuses for all floor RN positions for a couple yrs not that long ago. We're pretty rural & simply didn't have people applying. After resorting to travelers & then bringing in passport RNs from the Philippines, it hasn't been as bad & those bonuses are gone again except for advanced practice positions. Just looked online & one of our sister hospitals is offering $10k there for RNs to apply to float pool.

ETA: A referral bonus was also offered to current staff as well ($1500-2500 depending on whether referral was for a floor RN or advanced practice) & is still in effect I think.

I'm familiar with Springfield MO as family lives there. This is a nice town with several colleges: MSU, Drury and a community college all offering nursing degrees. Cox is the other major player in this area so maybe they are offering more money than the Mercy system?

Here is a position in Utah offering $20,000 in a sign on bonus. It's for NICU.
