Hello,
I've been searching through the message boards and I just can't find much information on people who go/have gone to the nursing program at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. I was wondering...what was your entering GPA? What was your NET score? How did you like it? What hospitals did the school use for classes? Do you feel like you got a good education there?
Thanks so much!
Sarah
To everyone already in the program... how often do you attend school? Is it everyday or just 2-3 times a week. For classes - do they take attendance. I am really debating if I am going to commute. Basically I have to commute from Dallas if I want to go to nursing school or I can't go. I wonder if I miss class a few times will I fail do to attendance. I know that we have clinicals and I can't miss those but can I miss lecture sometimes and still be okay. I read on another post that someone hardly went to class and still made B's. I am not saying I am going to skip class - but if the occasional arises to where I have to miss, I don't want to be screwed. Any insight would be helpful.
Hey Alum 08-Not really sure what to tell you on skipping, if you do decide to skip the one you can probably forgo is the Intro to Nursing-that one still takes alot of study time and usually the professor tells us relevant stories and makes the material stick better, for health assessment, Do not, Do not skip this one, its a very tough class, and if you do path or nursing stats they are online, path you will have to meet for tests about 5 or 6 time during the semester and Nursing Stats is completely online, Don't underestimate this one its pretty tough also, I made the mistake on procrasinating on this one...didn't do myself any good!!!!! Also not sure if I mentioned it before or not but make sure you leave 1-2 pre-req's to do on your second semester if you need full time load for financial aid, if not I would say go ahead and knock them out on the first semester so their done and you don't have to worry about them, in the next semester we have Basic and Lab which is 5 credit hours and Pharmacology which is 3 but I've heard alot of rumors saying its a very challenging course....and that is all
Far as the schedule for the first semester if they don't change it is
Family Health Assessment-Mondays-1-4 p.m-(Be prepared to study alot on your own time for this one)
Introduction to Nursing-Tuesdays 1- 2:20 p.m
Pathophysiology-On Wednesdays throughout the semester, we meet at 1p.m to discuss the test, 4-5 p.m is test, and 20 minutes on collaborative testing, which the professor will clue you guys out on that one....
And you choose what day for lab, its 2 hours long, and its a sims lab-we work with manequinns and each other...
This may seem managable at first, but next semester gets crazier and after that just get crazier and crazier for example I have 2 pre-req's left to knock out, and because the way the offer classes for second sememster, I have school every single day, not trying to be discouraging just realistic...
You know what you could do is just try commuting for a couple of months and see if you can handle it, that way you don't relocate for no reason, but I personally couldn't take the commute, doesn't mean you necessarily won't be able to....
Well I took Intro to nursing at UTA so I dont have that here. But basically Health Assessment is on Monday from 1-3:50, Patho is pretty much online...you go on the first time but after that only on the test days...everything else concerning Patho is online. My clinicals are on Thursdays from 10-12....i think if you have to take Intro then its on thursdays at 1pm....I didnt take statistics here but i think thats an option if you need to be full time for financial aid. IN MY OPINION you can miss some health assessment lectures and still get a high grade...sometimes she has pop quizzed and she has had a guest speaker twice so far and their material has been on the exam...but other than that its not necessarily required for you to come....neither patho or assessment take roll. Im not sure in Intro....but in clinicals they do mark who is there and who is not, but very close to the end of the semester they have makeup labs for those whi have missed them earlier in the semester. Im not so sure about the 2nd semester though because i think some days we have like 6 45am clinicals...Basic is at 8am and Pharm is at 9 30 mondays and wed.....clinicals are on tue or thursdays. I hope this helped!
Okay that sounds much better! Thanks you guys. I am hoping that I can get my the stats class waived bc I took stats at Tech and I took a graduate stats course last semester. I have taken almost every single nursing course in the degree plan. I went to Tech several years ago but dropped out to follow a guy to Dallas... Oh I wish I would have finished. So I am hoping that it all comes back to me once I get the hang of things. I am glad to hear that some of the courses are online. I won't be applying for financial aid because I am doing the eMBA program at TWU and will finish in December. It sounds crazy to do two programs - I know. But the eMBA program isn't bad at all. It meets 3 Saturdays per course... so I will have to go 9 Saturdays in the fall. I plan to use some of extra financial aid money towards my tuition at MSU. Then in the Spring I will apply for financial aid but I don't think I can get it since I already have a degree. Gosh I remember how stressful nursing school was - but I am up for the challenge. Thanks for letting me know those two classes are online... that makes it sooooo much more do-able. Then if it gets too crazy... I can consider moving.
Alum 08-Apply for Financial Aid anyway, I also have a degree already, its in B.S in information technology management, and yes you are right that after the first degree you don't qualify for the pell grant, but you could possibly be applicable for other money out there...Nothing in stone yet but I lost my job in November of last year and went and filled out a special conditions form for Fall 2010 because of the drastic change in income, and they said I may qualify for some grants....It doesn't hurt to try try the worst they can tell you is no...also the forms they needed for me personally was 2008 tax forms, pay stubs from my previous job and then the one preceding job to my enrollment into school, and a letter explaining my situation, just call them and ask, oh and duh I'm sure you know this too, gotta fill out that FASFA
Oh and by the way Intro is on Tuesdays 1-2:20 p.m...
