Midwestern State University

Published

Hello,

I've been searching through the message boards and I just can't find much information on people who go/have gone to the nursing program at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. I was wondering...what was your entering GPA? What was your NET score? How did you like it? What hospitals did the school use for classes? Do you feel like you got a good education there?

Thanks so much!

Sarah

The information that you guys are providing is great!! Even though I wont be starting until Spring it still helps me prepare for what to expect and being a single parent that is so important.... Thank you ladies!!

Alum 08-The nursing stats is completely online, and the Psychological stats is on campus

No problem! It wasnt this much info for me when I applied...most of the info prettyladie gave last summer so it helped me alot!

Alum 08-Clarification on Intro to Nursing its Tuesdays and Thursdays, not just Tuesday....

Okay I have a few more questions - sorry guys! But you guys are so great for answering all these questions. Does the nursing program go during the summer or is it just fall and spring? I think I still have to take 3 classes, but I am going to check on that bc I am already core complete. But if I have to take them - I was thinking about doing it in the summer. So they will accept Patho and Pharm from other community colleges right? Like Dallas Community College District?

Alum 08-

As of right now nursing classes go for five semesters, for example

Spring 2010

Fall 2010

Spring 2011

Fall 2011

Spring 2012

Also as of right now the way the program is set up you can't progress to the next nursing courses until successfully passing the ones before, and I know this seems like a duh...but just for an example, say someone in first semester can't pass one of the nursing courses (sidenote, but just so you know anything below a 74 is failing), then according to the above schedule they would have to take another semster and not graduate until Fall 2012, and the reason on this is because this person would then have to repeat the course failed, but be unable to register for the next nursing courses, because they couldn't pass the nursing course before it...hoped that helped a little bit, again not trying to scare you, just trying to be realistic, also unsure of what will transfer from other colleges, Catherine Rudy might be able to give you a better idea on that..

I just found out yesterday that I got in!!!

I understand Intro to Nursing requires a lot of study time, so I am thinking about taking one or two core classes with a couple of nursing classes. I still need economics and Span II (and 2 PE classes).

I was thinking about taking Spanish II in the Summer and then taking economics, Intro to Nursing, Patho and Nursing Stats in the Fall.

Another option would be to take Patho in the Summer and then take Span II, economics, Intro to Nursing and Nursing Stats in the Fall.

I need to be a fulltime student to remain on parents' insurance. After January, I won't have to worry about that, so I am thinking about taking Family Heath Assess, Basic Nursing and Pharmacology (more than likely online through DCCC) for the Spring semester.

Can anyone offer any insight into these classes or opinions on the workload?

khchrissy-I mis stated on the Intro, that one doesn't take alot of study time, I just wanted to emphasize on attending lectures because of the stories the professor tells to drive the story home, also she hands out power point notes to the class and 75 percent of the material comes from the powerpoints for the tests..Personally I would take the 2 p.e classes during second semester, and economics and Span 2 with the first, the reason I say that is because once you reach 3rd semester you will be doing 13-16 semester hours with just nursing courses and clinicals alone, if you don't need a full time load for financial aid, I would knock out as much as you can during the summer

My personal opinion is dependent upon how comfortable you are with the Spanish, if its difficult for you I would save it for the fall, if its easy for you take it during the summer, I would save Patho for fall, based simply on the amount of content it entails, also if this is one that is required under the nursing portion, you can't afford to get below a 74 on it ( I could be wrong on that one, I'm not entirely sure which courses at this point counts for that) Also from all the classes listed far as pre-req's Economics looks like the one that would be easier taken during the summer, but then again is just my opinion...Also nursing stats isn't bad as long as you don't put it off and stay on top of it, try to knock out alot of that in the beginning of the semester...

The study time will vary from person to person but for me

Intro-I have attended every class and I try and read the material right before class, and about 2 days before the exam I write down everything from the powerpoint notes and the day before I reread the chapters, the tests are usually over 3 chapters sometimes 4, for the most part the test questions are pretty straight forward, making an A in this one so far

Nursing Stats-I usually print off teachers notes, then write them down on my own, then review his practice questions, it takes me about 3-4 days to finish, luckily the professor leaves the quiz open and you can exit in and out of the test as long as you don't submit, after you submit you no longer have access, Currently have a B in this one

Patho-For the most part, I think most of us study the day of the review, the professor goes over what will be on the test for an hour, then we all go and study for about 3 hours and then take the test, and have a 20 minute review after (this one includes online weekly quizzes, that take up a little bit of time) there are 28 of them in total, do yourself a favor and try to knock out as many as you can ahead of time, This one's also a B for me, but be forewarned the teacher asks the test questions in a very odd manner, if you have time make sure to review the book and her blueprint that she usually has available about 4 days before her review...

Then Family Health Assessment-I honestly haven't got a handle on how to study on this one yet, I'm struggling, so i wouldn't be the best person to ask, hopefully someone else can respond and clarify for you a little bit better....

By the way congrats on making it in!!!!!!

oh and I need to clarify on something I just remembered that the majority of the P.E credits are only 1 credit hour so it would be somewhat redundant to take 2 in same semester, if you need a full time load, save the easiest pre-req for you for second semester along with one p.e.....

Thank you so much for this information. I really really appreciate it. I am so excited that I was accepted into the program. I am probably going to hold off on Family Health Asessment until the Spring semester, especially if it is a tougher class. The information you provided me has been so helpful. Again, thank you so much for the info.

Khschrissy-

Someone else may need to clarify this, but I was double checking the BSN sequence you have to take and I think its required to take Health Assessment to progress to the next semester, ie Pharmacology and Basic, I'm unsure whether that includes Intro and Path...I would call/and or email Catherine Rudy for clarification...

I just checked the website and you are 100% correct. I am going to meet with Cat again to see what my options may be so that I can finish up my core classes before getting too far into the program when classes get more busy. I'll post what I find out just in case anyone else is thinking about doing the same thing. Thank you so much for pointing this out because this would have definitely caused problems next semester.

I think I may still do Span II over the Summer just to get it over with and take Family Health Assessment, Intro to Nursing, Patho, and economics in the Fall. I don't see that the statistics class is a pre-requisite for any of the nursing classes, so maybe I can take that one in the Spring so that I at least have it completed before nursing research the following Fall. I think you are right about getting the core classes out of the way before the I have more clinicals. I can always take the PE credits later (even if I have to take those in the summer). I cannot thank you enough for pointing out the pre-requisites. I don't know why I didn't realize it before. I knew the classes had pre-requisites, but I think I read that someone was taking two nursing classes and two core classes and then I was so excited about getting in the program, I just completely forgot to check the pre-reqs again. That would have been a serious blunder on my part! :o
