Microbiology - Fall 2005

Published

Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.

Classes start August 22. When do yours start?

What text are you using? We're using Tortora.

And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

I got a 95% on my 2nd lecture exam! Woo hoo!

Congrats girls on great grades, we can do it :)

Can anyone recommend a good site for help with the unknown? We are speding the rest of the semester on our unknowns and I feel overwhelmed. So far I've isolated my Gram negative (I hope) but my Gram positive is a little hard.

I'm just lost on where to start and what to do. I know we are supposed to do the tests that we did in class but which one do I start with? The Bergy's (sp?) Manual isn't helping much or at least it's not making sense to me.

Help?

In two weeks we do unknowns. I don't have a good link, becuase we get enough information in our lab manual and PHOTO ATLAS FOR THE MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY by Leboffe and Pierce. One thing we have in our notes is a spreadsheet of all the possible unknowns with the test results. That will really help. I plan to figure out what tests will help eliminate the most bacteria.

Though you might try this one.

I got a 82% on my 3rd exam.:balloons:

We just finished our unknowns this past Friday. It's funny. From looking at the streak plate, then confirming with a gram stain, I knew that my unknown bacteria was Escherichia coli.

After doing the other tests it turned out I was right. Well... actually the only test that messed up was the API. Stupid API...

Actually that link provided by Malia is perfect. Look under biochemical tests. Do all those. At the end do the API.

We just had our 2nd exam on Tuesday, and people are WAY Po'd. They were ALL trick-'em-up type questions. I can't fathom why this instructor cannot just ask straight-forward question on the material. For instance, she said (and I have on tape to prove it! LOL) that she wanted us to know how much ATP is made when one molecule of glucose passes through glycolysis and the Electron Transport Chain, and how it's made. On the exam though, she asked how many ATP are made during another process, one she told us was not important to know, but she was just telling us because she wanted us to be aware that ATP is made by several ways. It is so infuriating!!

Although I didn't get one, many of my classmates got the dreaded "you're failing" letter from the nursing department, letting them know they cannot continue with their nursing classes until they pass the Micro with an 80%. And even at that, our nursing classes and sciences are only held once a year (meaning Micro is only offered in the fall, Med/Surg II in the spring, etc.), and once matriculated, we're not allowed to take any courses at any other college. So those who fail must wait a whole year to resume their studies.

I'm hoping and praying I made at least an 80 on this past exam, but I'm really doubting it. I barely passed the last one with an 84%, and have failed miserably the 3 pop-quizzes in lab (though apparently I'm not failing combined, since I didn't get a letter).

Anyway, just venting. I've heard that several students went to the Dean about this instructor, and there was a meeting held with faculty. She's not new, so they must have had complaints or know about her teaching style. I just wish her exam were more knowledge-based, not "can I slip this in there and see if they catch it". That's not the way nursing exams are given, and it strikes me as odd that because this class is ONLY given to nursing and biology majors, she'd want to do it way differently.

Geez, I wanna know where these schools are that let you in the nursing program and then let you complete the prereqs....How are you doing Micro when your already in nursing school?

There are no schools in California that let you take the prereqs simultaniously while your in the program. Thats great, Id be ecstatic about that!

(seriously....where is this school?? Probably east coast huh?)

Actually I have a cousin in West Virginia who actually has a bachelors degree in nursing and never had to take statistics or speech....schools are all so different.

In Las Vegas for ADN you only have to have A&P I done (plus Eng, Math, Psych) You can take A&P II, Micro, history, sociology and speech later. Although they have to be done by a certain semester in NS. But without them, good luck getting in! They give you points for admission for having them done!

hey everyone! i'm new around here, but i'm also in micro this semester and we are using the tortora book too. we are currently working on our final unknown and one of the books that has been the most helpful for me is an atlas of some sort. i can't think of the exact name, but it is spiral bound and has a red cover. i like it better than bergey's b/c it has pictures and descriptions. i have class and lab tomorrow so i will check on the name and post again. hope this helps!

At my school ( in maryland) you can apply when you are currently enrolled in A+P 2 and you can take Micro concurrent with Fundamentals...but the truth is MOST people don't get in unless they have already finished AP+2 and are currently enrolled in Micro. Therefore all pre-reqs will be done by the time you enter Fundamentals.

I have lab exam #4 tomorrow, lecture exam #2 on Tues and lab exam 5 on Thurs! Ack!

I am ready for lab exam tomorrow...but I have a LOT of memorization to get down this weekend for lecture open ended test questions.... steps in HIV cycle, etc etc.
