Microbiology - Fall 2005

Published

Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.

Classes start August 22. When do yours start?

What text are you using? We're using Tortora.

And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

Haha, now that is being bored lol :)

I like the class, the teacher is pretty funny so that helps otherwise half of the class would commit suicide lol

People are dropping this class like crazy, we started with 35 and there is 17 of us left. :(

Has anyone done a slide-mold culture yet?

I cultured Rhizopus stolonifer, but forgot to draw a picture of it.

Here is a great website that has pictures of several molds/fungus.

Good luck in lab and class!

Here's another website I just found. It's great for photos in general.

Just got back my lecture exam- 98%. We aren't given the tests back- just our grade so I don't know what I missed...but I dont care either! Woo Hoo!

I just got my second test results back too, I got a 100%, I can't believe it.

Congratulations Remember this feeling. It keeps you going.

I'm hoping I got 100% on my test too. Except I have to argue for that last question. Luckily she lets us keep the test.

I'm leaving right now to go take my lab practicum. Ekkkkk! I'm nervous! 100 pts. Hope I don't go blank!

LOTS to remember...

This little bacteria was just rinsed with Grams Alcohol...he must be Gram-

:confused::idea: :smokin:

I haven't been able to keep up with this board, but I do get email updates occasionally. I think that I keep seeing messages about people who hate the class entirely.

Is it the teacher, or the class material, or both?

I LOVE my Micro class, and have been counting my blessing that I have so much fun in there. No flaming here, just curiosity and wondering if I am just a big nerd or something.

*hugs*

For me it's lecture. I LOVE lab. Our lecture is just realllly slow and boring. On Tuesday I played Tetris behind my book while he droned on for 45 minutes about viruses and then said " but you dont have to know this...I just wanted you to understand....it wont be tested on". It's always like that. I just cannot stand boring lectures.....it's not the material...I understand the material fine and have a strong A in the class..it's his lecture style....but in lab he's great..so its weird.

Stressful week in general. Just came back from lab where we gram stained our mini-unknowns. They both came out ok, though I was told that next time I need to do the alcohol step better to completely wash out the stain. I guess if you're not staining two bacteria at once you don't have to worry as much about overdecolorization.

So is everyone else going to do unknowns as their final project in lab? Our last two weeks is just devoted to that.

Malia

We aren't doing unknowns for grades- just as a pair in class. We actually just did them Tues and tomorrow I have to pull them to start the process.

Well, just got back from classes. Lab was exhausting! I knew most of the stuff, and was the 1st one done with the paper part, but somehow I ended up being the last one out!!!:chuckle

We had to do a gram stain, starting with a smear. I know the steps without problem, but I ended up doing it 3 different times! I couldn't seem to get the stain! Then I thought I saw a little pink thing :chuckle and it kinda looked like a rod. So, I was about to just give up after the 2nd time around, but it's not my nature, so...I did a third, and 3rd times a charm!! Funny thing is that I really did see a little pink thing and it was a rod!! But our instructor views our slide tomorrow to grade it, so I'm glad I finally nailed it. I HATE histology!!!! Always have, always will. I actually put coccobacillus, but after getting to the car and looking it up, I think I had E. coli and it is bacillus. Poop.

I am so glad that it over! Won't know the score for at least 2 days (streak plate needs to incubate, then get graded).

I enjoy lecture, same professor. He is awsome and draws lots of pretty pictures. I love pictures! Love lab too, except...of course...histology.

Lecture is *okay*. She sort of drones on, but I tape it on my PDA and listen to the highlights later on. I love lab though. Thought I DON'T like the pop-quizzes in lab! WHy not just say when we're having one, or do as we did in A&P2, and have one every week?
