Microbiology - Fall 2005

Published

Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.

Classes start August 22. When do yours start?

What text are you using? We're using Tortora.

And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

Yeah! I got 98/100 on the lecture test and 10/10 in lab! I guess my lab question I thought I missed, could have been interpreted as a curved rod, vibrio as well!!!!! So far...

Lecture

Quiz 1 10/10

Test 1 98/100

108/110 whoo hoooo

Lab

Quiz 1 9.5/10

Quiz 2 10/10

19.5/20

I actually am starting to understand this stuff now. Well, kindof.

I love computers! Without them, I would have had to wait until Monday for my test score and Weds. for my lab score. That kills me more than anything!!!!!

How's everyone else doing?

Sure glad I dropped that Micro teacher I had this summer. Always go with the prof that has been recommended! I was just trying to get it done so I would get the points for entrance (since I will not have finished the Fall course in time, I wont get the 2 points for it), but I'm sure I would be taking it again anyways.

Sorry...too much coffee today.

bye

Is anyone in the genetics stuff yet?? How do you learn all the codon and mutation stuff??? My head is spinning!

My problem with the genetics part (I just did the test last week) was the whole translation and transcription part. I knew the difference, but misread it during the test getting two questions wrong.:angryfire So remember that part.

And if you need to do the whole translating/transcripton yourself, it helps to write out exactly what goes with what: A & T(U), C & G. I kept on getting them messed up just trying to remember what goes together in my head.

That's the two tips I have. If you have any other questions, I'll try to answer it while it's still fresh in my head.

We aren't touching that. It was assumed that we learned in Molecular BIO so all we had was a take home exam on it.......which requireed some review! LOL! I got a 58/60

We have our first lecture exam next Thurs. 75pts worth of matching + mult choice and 25 pts worth of open ended discussion. Also have lab test #2 the same day ( joy!). So far I have a 100% in this class....but I have to say I dread going everyday to lecture...it's just sooooooooooo damn boring. Today we moved onto eukaryotic and had to rehash the entire organelles again...I really wish we could just skip over it all- we all HAD to take molecular + cell bio to get into this class so I don't see why we have to painfully sit there and listen to yet another week of " golgi apparatus does this" and what not. He skipped the genetics part...not sure WHY he won't skip this part.

I still love lab though........................

Can anyone pls tell me if S. Epidermis is Gram + or Acid fast. I think it is Acid fast i'm just not sure.

It's definitely Gram(+).

It's (-) for acid-fast.

If you want to comfirm my answers, just do a web search. You'll find ample information.

We got our grades from the first test back last night. The entire class got C or D. No A or B or F.

That is kind of weird...

The professor gave us a long chat about how to get organized, and to follow her outline to only study what she has mentioned on it.

I am a little disappointed, I am finding this class harder than I thought it would be....but since the whole class is in the same boat, I don't feel so bad!

She's right it's gram +.

For acid- fast remember it's the Mycobacterium's.

Huh,

this is funny becos I got + for both the gram and acid fast;

what about M.Smegmatis is it acid fast or not I got that it is Non acid fast

Do you mind me asking where you found that it was non-acid-fast? According to my book + professor the entire genus Mycobacterium is acid-fast.

I think you have to redo the lab experiment. Acid-fast staining is used for detecting the presense of all Mycobacterium.

Here's a quote from my lab book:

"The acid-fast stain is an important differential stain for identifying bacteria in the genus Mycobacterium, some of which are pathogens (e.g., M. leprae and M. tuberculosis, causative agents of leprosy and tuberculosis, respectively)."

I don't know how you got the Staphylococcus epidermidis to show (+) for acid-fast. What technique did you use? When my class did this lab we used the Ziehl-Neelsen method. The counterstain used was methylene blue.

Anything that was negative for acid-fast staining was the color blue. Just like you, we did M. smegmatis and S. epidermidis. The Mycobacterium was pinkish red and the Staphylococcus was stained blue.

That means the S. epidermidis is negative for acid-fast.

The other method of staining is the Kinyoun. If you used that method, then your S. epidermidis should have stained green by the brilliant green counterstain.

I guess after reading my post you won't have to redo the lab. Haha! Just remember what I wrote if you have a quiz or have to write a lab report.

Good luck in lab!
