Microbiology - Fall 2005

Published

Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.

Classes start August 22. When do yours start?

What text are you using? We're using Tortora.

And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

Malia

Thanks, I will look it up.

LKG6: No, it can't be an on-line article. All articles have to be from a managzine or newspaper. We can't use medical journals either. I've been mostly looking at Newsweek, Time and Popular Science. We have to copy the article and submit it with the sumamry.

I don't have a link, but if you do a Google search on Eastern Equine Encephalitis, the New England states are getting hit with that hard now. QUOTE]

Malia thank you for the studying tips, I am one that will try and cram at the last minute but our next test will be on bacteria and viruses. We have to know which is gram neg or gram pos and all what the names of them and what disease that they can cause. My question is whats a good way to remember all of this. My test is like 2 weeks and I want to be prepared. Thanks in advance.

You really need to know how you learn better.

I made a chart & then studied that. I also made a CD-R & listened to that in my truck.

What did you make a CD of? I have a digital voice recorder but I have yet to figure out how to transfer the lecture to CD.

Bah! I didn't do as well as I wanted to on my micro exam. My fault for not giving myself ample time to learn everything that I need to over 8 stinking chapters. Oh well...

Now...

Here is a website that has photographs of several bacteria that have been gram stained. There are also links to other websites that have photographs and links to information pertaining to microbiology.

Gram stain again... a couple pictures and video.

I boomed by first test, but Im studying now and my test is like 2 weeks away. I didn't realize how much she wanted us to know. Thanks for the websites.

I got a 87% on my first exam and 100% and 90% on my quizzes. Pretty happy with that since I never expected the exam to be so hard. Good luck everyone!

What did you make a CD of? I have a digital voice recorder but I have yet to figure out how to transfer the lecture to CD.

I bought a program called Wavepad (I think) online. What I did, is read my notes out loud, a little bit at a time. I saved each segment as a MP3. Then I burned it on a CD-R, using Burn4Free. (Another online program that I downloaded.)

I haven't purchased a digital recorder yet, but I'm thinking with a USB cable, you can transfer your lecture to your computer, then burn straight to a CD-R.

I have lecture quiz #2 tomorrow...again pretty OK stuff...just on gram +/gram-/acid fast cell walls and then the nucleoid/ribosomes/pili/etc and a-typical bacteria ( mycoplasms, rickettsia, chlamydias). Worth 10 points.. I feel ready. After that we have another one on Thurs on a bacterias ability to contact a cell, adhesions, invasions, escape innate + adaptive immune responses, phagocytosis, etc etc)

We had a pop-quiz in Lab today! :(

I don't think I did badly on it - just wish I could remember some of the questions so I could look them up!

Does anyone know if Staphylococcus epidermidis shows a capsule after under going a capsule stain?

If it doesn't, what does the slide look like? A red background with purple cocci bacteria?

I already know that Klebsiella pneumoniae exhibits a capsule.

Thanks for any help!

I had my 1st 50 question lecture test today. (100 pts) I circle the ones I knew I got right, no question, and I only had 5 that got me. Luckily, one of them I was able to get right later in the test. Gotta love other questions that either help you remember, or down right give you the answer to another question! Finally figured out another one racking my brain. The others, of course, could be narrowed down to 2 answers. Only 2 of them have me wondering if I answered right. Yeah!!! I knew I left with at least a 90! Got to my car, and of course couldn't drive anywhere until I looked at my notes.

In lab, on the 1st quiz (one every lab on prev. lab...5 questions, 10 pts.) I got 9 1/2. Luckily, my prof, who is the bomb, grades as though you are his friend, only marked 1/2 point off on the question (identifying a pic of a bacteria) because I picked the wrong bacteria, but I answered the 3 other things correct about the (wrong) bacteria. Had another today, and once again, I gave the wrong bacteria. But he wanted to know the shape and morphology term. It was on Spirillum (something...he doesn't make us memorize the species, just genus). I thought it was just a curved rod, vibrio. Bummer, it was a spiral, spirillum. They didn't look spiral though. Dang!!! It was worth 2 points. Funny thing is, if he looks real hard, he will see spiral/spirillum erased under my "final answer". Don't second guess yourself!! I hate to miss things on lab quizzes. I like to save those points to miss on the practiums! pooohy!
