Microbiology - Fall 2005

Published

Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.

Classes start August 22. When do yours start?

What text are you using? We're using Tortora.

And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

Malia

We just stained for the first time last lab... no gloves...BOY did I have red fingers from Safranin(sp??) LOL! He didn't require goggles either.....which I guess was OK because nothing even came close to splashing on me...we did wear disposable coats for this lab......we stained E.coli, M. luteus, E. aerogenes and epithelial cheek cells.

We had to buy a black plastic apron for the lab. I think it was $6. It doesn't even cover too well (so don't wear anything nice to lab!) The instructor had the gloves in the lab.

I really like my instructor, he is very funny and keeps it interesting! Now if only the lecture wasn't so DRY! I am taking it online, so reading all that dry material is killing me off. But so far, I got 100s on my first 2 quizzes - just wait 2 weeks for the real test though. :o

I hear you....our lecture is drier than sand! Our first test isn't until OCTOBER 13th! We do have bi-weekly quizzes which are so easy they are a joke. My first LAB test is this coming Tues but it should be easy.....just shapes/sizes/arrangements of bacteria/binomial nomenclature/gram +, gram _, and acid-fast, water-soluble vs. non-soluble, pellicle, turbidity, sediment, and some equations and a bunch of definitions

I'm a bit late in finding this thread ....

but I'm taking micro and a&p in addition I work full time. Studying is a challenge to say the least. The micro book is by Talaro. I also ordered an additional "micro for dummies" book from Amazon. My first test is on Friday. We had to purchase lab coats, but not everyone has one.

If anyone has a teacher who has given them class notes I would love to see them. I will share mine too.

My Micro teacher has his own webiste that it utilized by a lot of other schools. Our lecture/lab notes are all accessible on it.

I'm taking my second micro test tomorrow. It will cover glycolosis, Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain, we have to know all the steps and what's going on where. Basically we get a paper with a bunch of arrows and we have to fill the rest in plus questions. Also covered is DNA transcrption, translation and protien synthesis.

Did I mention we had less than a week and a half to study?

Wow that's a lot.

We did our portion on that in the form of a take home test. We didnt' even talk about it in class.

That's about how my class went. It was an 8-week class, that went so fast!

Maybe you'll be able to spend more time with the disease portion than we did.

Our class is 100% designed about the interaction between microbes+ the human body ( aka disease)...anything else... like the Krebs cycle..etc it was " assumed" we learned it in Molecular Bio and we didn't touch on it in class....just on the take home exam

That's how our class/lab is designed also. In fact, they call it Medical Microbiology. The bio majors take another version that's just Microbiology. Ours is just geared for nursing students.

Oh my!! That is a lot to study in a short period of time!

I can't decide if I like more frequent exams, or less frequent. In our A&P II class, we had weekly lab exams (short and sweet), but only 3 exam (not including the final) in lecture. There was SO MUCH packed into one exam, it was difficult to even recall info from the first units on the exam. I didn't like that much.

Unfortunately, Micro is going to be worse, with only TWO exams, plus a final, in the whole term. :uhoh21:

Had first lab test today and got a 100%. My professor actually grades them the second you turn them in so you know your grade before you leave. It was pretty easy, though, compared to what it could have been.
