Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.
Classes start August 22. When do yours start?
What text are you using? We're using Tortora.
And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

FINALLY - my first lab is tomorrow. It seems like everyone here has like a 3 week jump on me!
It's all on using the microscopes, which we did in A&P I and II labs, though we didn't use any oil on the slides, so that will be new. I hope this week is better with the prof than it started off last week. What a PITA she seems like. She even went off on a tangent last week on how one should NEVER get an immunization unless it had been on the market for at least 10 years! She seems very, very "political", which is something I'm NOT taking the class for.

My microbiology class stared 9/7.
Our first exam is coming up really soon. In two weeks from tomorrow I think.
It's over the first 6 chapters plus 28, 29.
I'm not ready... I've been lagging.
At least the lab is easy so far. I looked at dirty water under a microscope. Woo hoo!
The text book that we're supposed to be using is "Brock Biology of Microorganisms" 11th edition or 10th edition.
I'm using the 9th edition. Hahaha! It was $5.00!
Good luck to everyone taking microbiology this semester!
Maybe we can talk shop some time and help each other study.
You know how there threads about gross things in nursing you can't talk to your loved ones about.
Well it's already started. I can't even tell my parents about what I did in lab yesterday (molds and yeasts) without grossing my mom out.:chuckle It's no problem for me. I just wanted to say how cool it was looking at peniccilin under the microscope.
First test for lecture next week. We're covering basic history, chemistry, basic cell structure, difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and DNA. Ugh. Though I'm glad she put off metabolism for the next test.

I did the same lab on Weds. We coughed on a blood agar plate, and on one plate we could touch it, press a coin on the agar, or whatever you wanted. I pressed my fingertips on it. My mother in law was serving up cheesecake last night and was topping it with frest raspberries with her bare hands. She said "excuse my fingers, but they're clean". I told her it was ok, but probably the last time I would allow her to do it, since I will see the results from my "freshly washed hands" next week. Heehee.

We got to look at E. coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis under the scope on Thursday. It was pretty neat. I am WAY more enjoying Micro lab than I ever did with A&P I or II labs. My lab partner is taking it for the second time (actually, several are. We need an 80 or better to pass/continue in the nursing program) and said we'll do nasal swabs and throat cultures soon. Plus the handwashing one. And I'm looking forward to it!
I was a little nervous in lab, being that I'm diabetic and have a butt-ton of healed, semi-healed, and fresh finger-pokes on my fingers. The lab instructor said I could use gloves if I wanted, but she thinks that just practicing really good aseptic technique I should be fine. That is what I did with the two cultures on Thursday, but I'm wondering if I should wear gloves just to be sure.
I must say that I was astounded at the number of students NOT wearing a lab coat. It's not a requirement, but highly recommended. I have my lab coat from nursing clinicals that I'm not using this semester, so I'm using that, knowing I may have to replace it if it gets stained or whatever. It was really gross though, seeing people not wearing anything but their regular clothes, and then proceed onto lecture and other classes afterward.
Anyone else see this?
We were told nothing about wearing a lab coat. Some of the labs will require goggles and aprons, for which they supply.
I love my prof! He doesn't grade with any minuses! That means if you get a 71% in the class, he gives you a C. Plain ol' C!!! Anything over the halfway mark (75%, 85%, 95% +) will compliment your grade with a "+". So, if I get a 75% in his class, I will get a C+. Yipee! Of course, I'm striving for that beautiful A+ to keep my GPA up. I have A's in all my Bio classes, and I know that looks good for grad school, so.....study, study.
Anyone taken their first tests yet? How'd it go?

Nobody in our class has lab coats. It's not a requirement and since none of us are actually *in* the clinical portion yet...no one has one from that. We do have disposable ones for certain labs.
I have a lab coat from being a medical assistant, and I wore that in Micro & now in chem. I don't like the idea of having to share a plastic apron with 5 other students in different classes. You'd think they would actually give you a throw away for your own use as much as you pay.
In MicroSUX! there was one other student wearing a lab coat, in Chemistry, I'm the only one.
We have these lab coats that they give us. They're not real cloth labcoats, but some other material, not quite sure what. We have to wear gloves and closed shoes. We're supposed to wear goggles when we're staining. Apparently they are much more strict this semester after a couple of accidents last semester.

We were given the option to wear gloves. I was the only one who brought & wore gloves. Boy am I glad I did too, my hands would have looked like a rainbow. lol
We had to buy a black plastic apron for the lab. I think it was $6. It doesn't even cover too well (so don't wear anything nice to lab!) The instructor had the gloves in the lab.
I really like my instructor, he is very funny and keeps it interesting! Now if only the lecture wasn't so DRY! I am taking it online, so reading all that dry material is killing me off. But so far, I got 100s on my first 2 quizzes - just wait 2 weeks for the real test though.

I'm not using that book, but the Tortora one, and have the same problem. There are no answers anywhere to all of the review questions and critical thinking questions. Dumb way to do it, IMO. I thought they *might* be on the CD that came with the book, but they're not there either. Kinda makes it hard to study! :angryfire
