Microbiology - Fall 2008

Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!

Has anyone swabbed their nose and fingernails yet for Staph cultures? We "get" to see our results tomorrow.....

We get to do that next week...and according to our prof several of us will be carrying S. aureus. I just know it will be me, lol. Perhaps that's why I've been having unbelievable headaches the past few weeks. Is the stress eating anyone else alive? I honestly feel like I may snap like a dry twig at any moment!:no:

We haven't done any swabbing yet. But on Thursday we get to swab the throat, nasal cavity....... and RECTUM. Not looking forward to that one!

Me! Me! Me! This class is eating me up. I feel like I started out on the wrong footing and that I will just never catch up to get the grade I need out of this class. Not a great mindset, I know, but I am just exhausted from trying to get and make sense of this material. I am so jealous of all of you that are getting those great A's and B's in Micro (not a mean jealous though :) ). I am also really proud of all of you and I wish that I could have brought my A game to this class as well.

I have an exam tomorrow covering metabolic pathways, control of microbial growth, Fungi, Algae, Protozoa, Viruses, and a few other odds and ends. Some of it I have down, other stuff, like remembering all the organisms and the diseases they cause, is just not sticking. :banghead:I pray that I remember enough to get me through the test tomorrow. I wish lecture was going as well as lab for me. The hands on lab material makes more sense to me. I've still made some dumb test mistakes in there too but I have a B in lab.

Sorry for the vent. I guess I just needed to get it out before getting back to studying in a few minutes.

Just got back my lab test last night and I got a 93%! I was so excited ~ I just had to tell someone who'd really understand!!!!!

Yesss!! That is fantastic.. "Do a little dance...make a great grade..get down tonight...uuuhhhh...get down tonight!"

We are not doing any swabbing in our micro lab. Although I think it would be very cool to swab my nose and throat...I would have to pass on the rectum. Maybe I am nieve, but it seems very inappropriate to me to be doing that in a micro class. Not that you will be actually doing it in class, but you know. Makes me laugh a little. I can see everyone now after the culture has been sitting for a week.

OK, can someone just shoot me now??? We have our first test tomorrow - on 9 chapters!!! Arggggghhhhh, he says to expect questions on material from the book, the labs and lectures - so much!!!! I feel like everytime I figure out one thing another part falls out of my head, this is killing me. Plus I have a terrible cold and sore throat, coughing all day, so revision plan is out the window. If you dont see me on here tomorrow, you know I threw myself out of the window during the test :(

Just HAD to share last nights findings!

A girl (shes in the morning class I believe, i'm in the evening class, so our professor shared this story and the sample with us) took a sample of the water from the place she works at (not sure if I'm allowed to say the name, but its an ice cream place, well known). Did some tests on this water sample and found e coli! The water was from the bucket they use to rinse the scooper after each scoop so to not mix the flavors.

We all know by now that e coli is found in our intestines and expelled with our bile. The employees all take turns cleaning the restrooms - so not too hard to figure out just how e coli got from the toilet to the scooper - to ice cream. :eek:

We had our first exam last month and I got a 48%. I thought I understood but OBVIOUSLY did not. (In my defense this was the last exam of a 4 exam week... 4 exams... in 3 days!!!!) This class is KILLING ME!! I feel like I don't understand anything (Hello? Como esta? What language are we speaking here?)! Like I seriously understood French and Spanish more than this class.

Anyway..

I have to speak with my advisor on the 24th about failing miserably and prepare for our 2nd test on Halloween. I know how the convo with the advisor is going to go... "You're failing..."

"Yes... I am aware of this"

"What are you going to do?"

"Retake it....?"

"Good... have a good day."

We're into Metabolic stuff and DNA which is just... frazzling me.

i finally got my lecture exam results (7 weeks of material on 1 test) my teacher e-mailed me "your score was an 80...good work!" as i sat looking at the screen, that is not exactly what i was hoping for.:crash_com my hubby said maybe compared to the class that was good work....who knows!

btw the rectum swabbing, hmmmm i don't know about that one!! :eek:
