Microbiology - Fall 2008

Published

Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!

Wow, we're alot alike. I have amost-3-yr.-old twins. I am taking micro, A&P, nutrition and a speech class. All I do is study and take care of my kids, or I wouldn't be making it.

I just looked at my micro test from the other day I had a 90, but she hadn't graded our bonus questions yet. Appearantly I ended up with a 97 after she did! Yay! :D

I love the surprise of a higher grade!! On almost every test this semester we have had at least 2 points added with a question thrown out and on one test our teacher threw out like 4-5 questions, don't remember for sure!:yeah:

Got my Micro test score from the exam I took on thursday. I did better than last time but it was still a 69.5. My grade for the class, at the half-way point is a 66.4 . So, the best I can pull out of there is a C if I work my *** off to catch up. I am not sure if a B is possible at this point. The average test score from Thursday was a 74.4. There are 37 people left in the class and there are at least 10 people doing worse than me. There are only 3 A's in the class and they are a 90.8, a 93.1 and a 93.3. The class grade average is a 74.4. Is that the norm? That seems low to me for a whole classes average.

My class average with 60 or so students is closer to 50 or 60, so... Perhaps you're having similar issues with the professor that we are. He doesn't teach and every class, its some new issue! The next *fun*, though much less detrimental than usual, issue we are having with him, is that he has decided that either we're lying or he's just going to override campus policy that no classes are held on election day. He's decided its a good exam day...

I had not thought about class on election day. I think we have it but there aren't any tests on those days. Next one is the 13th and it covers 5 chapters. I think we have a lab quiz then too. Yesterday we started discussing various chemotherapies and what part of the cell they affect and all that stuff. I found it very interesting but she packed so much info into the 75 minute class that my head is still reeling. I have lab right after that with her and it was the first day we were working with our unknowns and prepping cultures for fermentation tests and my mind was fried. Lab is open today though so I am going to go in and do my gram stains and prep a culture for doing an endospore stain on tuesday.

How many of you have already done your unknowns? Anyone not have to do them? Also, how often do you have lab and for how long each time? Just wondering :)

Congrats to all of you that are doing so well!! :D I am definitely using so many of the tips in this thread and I've gotten a jump start on this tests material. Hopefully I can still pull my grade up and actually understand the info better.

Well, we finally got the results back from our first test (on 9 chapters!!!) I somehow managed 96% :yeah::yeah::yeah:

I got top of the class with that score, and am now ready to jump up and down in celebration, but with an A&PI test on Monday, should go study!

Great job!!!! That is a FANTASTIC grade, especially on 9 chapters!!! Woohoo!!!:yeah:

We have an exam on Halloween over metabolism, genetics and cell growth... I think I will pull my hair out. At least I can only do better than a 48%................. I hope..

Oh god, I hated that section! Hang in there, it gets better (and more interesting!):heartbeat

We started our unknowns on Monday. Day 1 we did a streak plate, then Day 2 we did the Agar slant. Monday we'll do gram staining.

My lab is from 6pm-7:50. But usually we are out of there by 7pm.

We're working on our unknowns. Some people have finished. I *think* I know what mine is. Our class meets Tues & Thurs. 5:30-6:50 is lecture and then 7:00 - 9:05 is lab. I'm really enjoying it! There is a lot of material. Our next lecture test is Thursday over 4 chapters. It's hard for me having tests on Thurs since I work FT. There's new material from Tues and no time to learn it.

We already did our unknowns a few weeks back. Mine wasn't really an "unknown" though...I got M. lutea which grows bright, bright mustard yellow in the agar. I did a little happy dance when I saw that tube full of mustard!:D We have lab twice a week (same as class). We do lab first from 4:45 to 6:15 and then class from 6:30 to 7:45. I love that schedule, lab goes by fast and it really helps me to grasp the material that's covered in lecture.

Then there's always S. Marcescens. Gad, does that STINK! As soon as I get a whiff, I know what it is. :)

We start the unknown in two weeks...the same week that I have to miss lab one day to take the HESI. She wants me to come in for a different lab one evening that week so that I don't get behind. I don't know why they have to schedule those tests during regular school hours :banghead:! Anyway, hopefully I won't get too behind, because I know that's a big project.

I am 100% sure that that is one of my unknowns :D so I just have to figure out my other one. I went in to open lab yesterday and I did my gram stains and set up the culture for an endospore stain and did my inoculations for the methyl red tests for lactose and sucrose fermentation. It was cool to get some one on one time with the professor and I also got to check out the other medical micro professor. I am actually more impressed with my own prof. and if I have to retake this I will stick with her I think.
