Ideas for a clinical "cheat sheet" ?
Awesome thread! I start clinicals in just 2 weeks and I'm really nervous about being prepared to make the most of my time there. I have a wonderful clinical instructor but I'm still shaking in my clogs.

If you could study before A & P I, what would you have done to get ahead before it??
I would have liked to have a better hold on all the bones, bone features and muscles. That was a lot of memorization in such a short period of time for me. Also reviewing the immune system would have made that chapter a lot smoother for me. Our prof. crammed it in at the very end. Before I took A&P II I went ahead and did the chapter reviews from the book and read through the lab book and that prepared me tremendously. Perhaps to introduce you to the anatomy side of things you could watch the Dr. Diamond anatomy lectures online. I adore her!

Need Support
Hugs! You are not a failure and this does happen to people all the time. Most programs have a policy about how many times you are allowed to retake a class (mine is that you can retake science courses once each but no more, other courses you can retake however many times you want) but most will at least allow once and not frown upon you. It all depends really. When I returned to school after a 10 year break I basically had to retake A&P 1 and 2 and I am about to have to retake the micro I'm in now. I am on the waiting list for entry into the program for January but if I'm not chosen I will need a higher grade in that course for the next round (sitting at a C right now - the minimum for entry). This bugged the hell out of me and made me feel stupid at first but after talking to my adviser I felt better. She let me know that it was actually more common than people let on and that having the guts to stick in there to retake a course for a better grade shows that you really want to be there. Whether or not she was blowing smoke up my a#& I don't know but I took it to heart and it made me feel a lot better. You are not a failure and stuff happens! You just have to pick yourself up and do what you gotta do. Don't lose sight of your final goal! Everyone takes a different path to get there so don't worry about others if you can help it. You can do it!! I am there with you!! Hugs!!

Microbiology - Fall 2008
No presentations or reports for this professor. She even made a huge deal at the beginning about how there were no ways to get extra credit and the only break we get is in lab. In there we can drop our lowest quiz grade and double the highest one (only worth 10 points anyway). Question - In the SIMS medium where tetrazolium salt is added when testing for motility, what is the real purpose of the salt? Is it purely to make the growth more visible? I thought she mentioned it turns red as a result of the bacteria metabolizing but she didn't expound on that any further and the lab book doesn't go into it either.

is the Nervous System for A&P1 really that hard to learn?
I loved the nervous system way more than the bones and muscles. I found it all easier to remember and really fascinating. To help me understand it from all angles I watched Dr. Marian Diamond's lectures on the anatomy and then a few other people's videos on youtube to help me with the physiology. Combined they gave me a great foundation to really understand it far better than some of the other systems. It also cemented my love of Dr. Diamond :redbeathe:up:

Got my letter last night.
Thank you all so much!! When I went to class yesterday I really expected to hear how everyone got accepted and I was geared up to not get sad about my alternate standing. Well, some had not gotten their letters at all, others did make it (the ladies with 3.8 and 4.0 GPA's that I know), and still others got rejected for various reasons. I felt really bad for those that got the definite no this time and I realized how honored I really feel by getting on the alternate list. I know I am where I want to be and that I will hang in there until I get in. If need be I will finish my art degree while I am waiting (lack about 4 classes and thesis for that). I am not sure how many people made it onto the alternate list but I have a meeting with my adviser on Monday and I will see if I can find out. I did learn that those who got accepted have about 2 weeks to pay their $175 deposit to hold their spot and to get most of their application stuff completed. After that letters will be sent to alternates as spaces come open.

Hugs! You can do it! How are your lab grades? Do you know if she drops a lowest test grade at the end? Hang in there!

Got my letter last night.
Thank you girls! The more I think about it the more positive I feel about it. I have met some wonderful people in my classes who have been told no several times and this was not a complete no. It will be interesting to go to class tomorrow and to see who all got in. Thank you all so much for being here and for helping me. Hugs!!

Got my letter last night.
I returned home from a wonderful weekend away with my husband (our 10th anniversary) to find THE letter in my mail. I was shaking and near tears sitting with it unopened in my lap. Bryan offered to open it for me but I felt like I should see it first. Well, I didn't get a definite yes but I got put on the alternate list. Last night I felt like it was the same as a no but this morning I am feeling a bit better about it. It's not the same as a no is it? Or is it the same but a nicer way of telling you no? Please share your thoughts with me on being an alternate.

WCCCD..Called the nursing office today
We also got a more definitive time frame for our letters today too - the first week in November. We'll just have to see if they are telling the truth. The nursing dept. had an open house on October 16th and this week people were getting letters from the department in the mail to thank them for attending the event. It gave more than a few girls fits to see that return addy on the envelope and it be a psyche!

To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....
I am constantly blown away by the "kids" texting in class. In Micro there are a few girls who text through lecture AND lab. In my ethics class there a guy that sits next to me who has never bought the class texts and spends the whole class time either writing his own name over and over whatever paper he has in front of him or he's texting. Two weeks ago he asked the professor a question and while she was answering he was texting! She seemed to just pretend it wasn't happening. About 10 minutes after the roll got passed around he just left after that. :angryfire

Microbiology - Fall 2008
That looks a lot like what we covered on our first exam. I am by no means doing great in this class but on the info I do know well it's because I made 4x6 study cards that I carried everywhere and I looked at whenever I had a few moments. For memorizing the bacteria names and characteristics and stuff like that I would sit down with blank paper and I would write each detail 7 times that I needed to memorize. As I would write it I would think about the info on it I needed to know. My hand would cramp up by the end of it but it did help me. Also repeating it out loud 7 times would help. My kids think I am crazy when I do that but I'm trying whatever I can to get it to stick. I got really behind with that 1st test material and I'm majorly trying to play catch up. What questions on there are you specifically stuck on? I'm sure we can at least help you there. Hugs !
