Microbiology - Fall 2008

Published

Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!

We start our unknowns on 11/4. I am very nervous because even though I have been doing the tests in lab and I made an awesome grade on our lab midterm....to be honest I don't really know what is going on! LOL Our teacher says he is going to give us a flow sheet to use so I guess I will see how it goes. I just have no idea how to even start or what needs to be done. He is not the best at telling us why we are doing such and such and what the point of everything is.

I am just hoping the flow sheet will explain things to me a little more clearly. I love the class and he is great on giving us reviews that pretty much tell us exactly what he tests on. However, being able to spit back memorized info does not mean that you actually "get it" and I feel a little lost.

Hope everyone else's unkowns are revealing themselves!

Although unknowns are pretty anxiety-producing, it's unlikely you'll have anything exotic. Your usual run-of-the-mill bacteria are pretty standard for the unknown: M. lutea, S. Marcescens, E. coli, S. aureus... Does anyone else think S. aureus is beautiful under the microscope? :)

We've still got another few weeks until we start our unknowns. Right now I'm supposed to be studying for our second lecture test (next week) but all I want to do is sleep! :)

Then there's always S. Marcescens. Gad, does that STINK! As soon as I get a whiff, I know what it is. :)

Haha, it does! So does E. coli and Proteus Vulgaris...Proteus is the WORST!!! Plus S. marc. grows red, so that's a pretty fair indicator of what it is if it's just on plain ol' tsa.

Our acceptance/denial/standby letters went out yesterday...I am so nervous!!!! I should know if I'm in or not today or tomorrow. Please say a little prayer for me. Thank you!:heartbeat

We worked on our unknowns last night. I have found out one of them. But the other one was contaminated! UGH!!! I was so hoping everything would just be smooth and go as planned. The professor said to just throw the contaminated one out and she gave me a pure culture of 'something' to work from. I still need to get busy writing up the lab report.

Good luck PreRN Katie! I'm sending good thoughts and prayers your way. I hope you get in!!!! :icon_hug:

Good luck, Katie!!! Geez, just getting through Micro is hard enough. I'm sure you would just love some good news right now. Also, hope everyone's unknowns are going well. We don't have them exactly, but there is going to be a scary practical at the end. My big accomplishment so far has been to be able to focus my microscope! And I'm pretty sure I can do a Gram stain without getting it all over myself.

I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :monkeydance:I got my letter last night and I am accepted into the nursing program as long as I finish Micro & Chem with a C or better and keep at least a 2.5 GPA. I am so happy!!!!:D I can't believe I finally made it! I start in January.

YAY!!! Way to go Katie!! Now you need to change your user name to reflect the awesome change!! :D

Thank you!!! Great idea!
