Microbiology - Fall 2008

Published

Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!

You always have such awesome grades, congratulations! :D Any study tips for the rest of us? :)

Thank you very much!!! I'm totally an auditory learner so I always make flashcards and force someone to quiz me, seems to work pretty well at making the info stick in my head. Although my hubby is usually less than enthused about having to hear stuff about parasitic worms and DNA replication:chuckle...anyone else's family getting annoyed with all the juicy info you're bringing home from class? I made the mistake of telling said hubby that his favorite cheese smelled like E. coli on an agar plate...oops!:barf02:

Yeah, my boyfriend keeps calling me a nerd, because everyday when I get out of class I have to call him and tell him about some random interesting thing we learned in microbiology or A&P :specs:. He means it in a good way, though. He is totally supportive, and never forgets to ask what grade I made on every test and quiz. And that's alot, between taking four classes, and two of them having labs in which we get separate tests from lecture. But I imagine I can be annoying, with my love for obscure medical facts. :chuckle

I bet I would like your hubby's cheese. I always say that the stinkier a cheese is, the better it tastes! :yeah:

My sentiments exactly! I meant it as a complement to the cheese...he just didn't take it that way. :chuckle

Well, Our class got our exam results last night for our first lecture exam. They were not good. Out of 19 students (down from 24 the first week), there were 3 B's, 3 C's, 5 D's and 8 F's. I am very thankful that I got an 84(B) since, most of the class scored 45-65. I am pretty sure that when we have class next week that there will be even fewer students, since several said they were withdrawing from the course.

I am taking four classes, and last week we had an exam in every class. This week I noticed ALOT fewer people in every class. I guess people figured out if they could handle it or not last week.

Well, E. coli does ferment lactose, so maybe that's why it smelled so similar :)

I'm finding out that I'm an auditory learner as well. I record my lectures and listen to them while I'm at work. I work in the medical records dept of a large doctors' office, with the EMR so I am going through patient charts all day long. Yesterday I saw something about Mycobacterium avium and I got all excited and was explaining to my coworkers about how you can't Gram stain that one, and you have to acid fast stain it. They were all like, you are the BIGGEST nerd. But it was fun for me :) I find that I learn things really well by explaining them to other people. I see my coworkers more than my husband unfortunately, so they get the brunt of the Micro talk :)

I have to say, I'm really enjoying this class so far. I think when I go on to my BSN that I'd like to take some more Micro classes.

You guys are cracking me up about the cheese....just don't cut it! LOL

I am so excited...I just checked blackboard and our teacher posted our grades. I got the highest grade in the class, a 96. But he is throwing out the two questions that I missed so I will end up with a 100.

Everybody did better than last time. Here are the stats:

A = 3

B = 9

C = 5

D = 4

F = 0

Max = 96.0

Avg = 80.0

Med = 81.0

Min = 64.0

I don't think I have ever made the highest grade in any my science classes. I normally do pretty good but I haven't ever been at the top. Last test I was second to the top. Not trying to really brag, but I am just so proud of myself and I feel I can boast on here, I would never do it in person kwim?

Now I have to worry about my A&P II test this week. Always something to stress over.

Yep, I'm always driving my husband crazy with "fun facts". I find them so darn interesting, but usually manage to bring them up during dinner. :rolleyes:

e. coli really does smell like "good" cheese!!! lol. one of our favorite things around here is to make grilled stink-cheese sandwiches. after counting e. coli colonies on agar the other day, it's going to be awhile before i can eat that sandwich. lecture class is going great -- we've got a big exam on thursday. i was filling out a study guide last night and have a question: what mechanism do bacteria use to reproduce? is it conjugation?

Specializes in none yet!.

Bacteria divide and multiply by binary fission - where one cell splits into two. Conjugation is the process by which one bacteria passes a plasmid to another by formation of a pilus, usually the plasmid confers something like drug resistance. Hope that helps!

Hey all, I am also taking micro right now, its my last science before entering theprogram for Jan. I just got my FIRST test back, got an 85 ..GRRRR i was soo angry...i thought i got the A. Ill take the B got 5 more tests to go in a VERY short time span..its mid term already and we only got ONE test done..How are you guys doing?

Anyone starting nursing in Jan?

Rachel

I myself took Microbiology over the summer session, and although it was very difficult it was well worth it. The book was expensive about $190. I didnt even open the book, but I did use the workbook. I ended up with an A in the class, but it was hard work. I didnt get to see any of my friends for those 6 weeks. Good Luck to all.
