Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!
I am going nuts in micro - along with the rest of the class, our teacher is all over the place - teaches stuff apparently as it pops into his head, and I am finding it really tough to know what he wants. We have only three tests and one is next week and I am very scared!
I thought A&P I would be my challenge this semester as I studied micro 9 years ago, and have my Masters in genetics, but A&PI I have 100% in (with two tests) and I am very nervous micro is going to pull my grade down!
Last week he said Mycobacteria have a cell wall, and I asked if that was true because the week before he said it did not, he answere dby talking about Chylamydias - I said that was not what I asked and he shrugged his shoulders
Also, he drew DNA base pairing on the board and put two bonds between G and C and 3 between A and T, I told him that was wrong and he just got ****** - apparently it is ok to teach it wrong!
Any suggestions of good resources would be much appreciated, I figure I need to learn everything he has even remotely touched on as he gives no clue what he is after - HELP!!!!

Mycobacterium do have cell walls, but they don't Gram stain correctly (need to acid-fast stain them) because of their waxy lipid layer. Mycoplasmas are the ones with no cell walls that can be all sorts of different shapes.
We got our grades back tonight and I got 14/10 on our microscopy practical with a Gram stain for extra credit, and a 101 on the lecture final with the extra credit questions on there too! Time to get ready for the lab midterm next week now!
I wanted to post my notes for the Micro Mid-term. Just hope this might help some of you. My teacher prepared this for us and emailed it to us today. We have our test on Thursday night.

Sorry your teacher is so horrid! If you'll look on page 11 of this thread, you'll see a bunch of helpful microbiology websites I posted, with some annotations. I posted one additional website on p. 13 of this thread.
Sounds like your prof mixed up mycoplasma and mycobacteria. My prof did the same thing, but at least he recognized his mistake and apologized for the confusion!
With a master's in genetics, it must kill you to see a prof draw DNA base pairing incorrectly!
Outstanding everyone on the grades!! I just knew this would be a better week of grades! "itsinthegenes" I'm so sorry about your teacher...that would drive me nuts. This stuff can be confusing enough as it is.
I had my first lecture exam yesterday (7 weeks of material.) I can honestly say it was the most difficult exam I've ever had.....I don't know what to expect.
Mycoplasma does not have a cell wall, are highly pleomorphic, may produce filaments (resembling fungus, mykes= fungus) and range in size from 0.1 to 0.25 micrometers, it has a plasma membrane and it is the smallest free living organism, according to our book and my professor. Mycobacterium have cell walls. Here is a site that I found helpful: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072320419/student_view0/chapter1/chapter_overview.html
Anyone using this book for their Micro class? I guess it really doesn't matter which book you are using but I could use some pointers for trying to understand metabolism of prokaryotic organisms. Anyone have any pointers on how to remember/memorize the steps of glycosis and the krebs cycle?
Thanks,
Donna

This course is proving to be interesting but difficult for me :) Congrats to all of you who have done so well on your tests!! Good luck Lennonninja getting a great grade on your test be sure to let us know!! I had my first lecture exam on tues and we also get our grades back tonight......I think I did okay however I don't want to jinx myself :)
I do need help though......for the life of me I cannot figure out the serial dilution equations to figure out cfu/ml; any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks and good luck to all
