okay, people! who is with me on this one? i am feeling a little nervous about all those slides! i'm looking forward to meeting everyone in this course!
i will gather up any useful sites i find in the last med micro club and elsewhere and put them in this post!
here's a start ..

bless you for this...i start micro this week. i feel like i'll be looking to these sites for help. i'm taking chemistry as well. i'm not sure if that is good or bad. anyway, thanks again.
hey akmegs,im using the same book and edition, i know we'll do good with online micro! do you have to go to the school for lab? i have to go every wed. for lab. this semester i bought a digital voice recorder that allows you to download your recordings to your computer.i figured after each lecture i would download the files to my computer and orginize the files by each chapter we go over. i think that is a good way to study and stay organized.another good way to stay orginized is to make an outline of lectures, print them out and file them by chapter.when it is time to start studying for finals, or when you have to refer back to certain lectures or chapters it will all be there in order. i am very scattered brained sometimes :uhoh21: so orginization is soo important!!does anyone else have any suggestions? anything helps me!
hey ange822s,
it's great to have someone else taking it online with same book even! i wish we did labs in person but they are all online on a cd rom. i feel like i probably won't get a much out of it as i would if it were "live" so i will have to work twice as hard to learn it myself. making an outline is a great idea! i know i'm going to have to stay focused and on top of the reading every week. good luck to you!
meg :)
I start my Micro class on the 19th if Jan its a little late to start up, but its a hybrid course (meets once a week for lab and the rest of the classwork is done online) I have had this teacher before for A&P and he is pretty straight forward and I really like his teaching style. The book that is being used for the course is Foundations in Microbiology by Talaro and the lab book is Microbiological Applications by Brown Benson's. Is anyone else using any of these books for their Micro course? Im a little nervous I always get nervous when starting a new science course, all I can do is my best and I wish everyone else the best of luck in this course and with the help from everyone in this club we should all pass with A's and B's
I had my first Micro Lecture class last night. Instructor is VERY enthusiastic about the subject which makes it more interesting. Of course I'm totally creeped out by everything we learned in regards to what is in our food. Great diet motivator I think. Who wants to eat a sandwich with cheese after that class YUCK.
We will be tested every week on the prior week's content Plus we have 4 exams with a Comp Final. I'm going to be 1 busy girl this semester.
I start my Lab class tonight. Hopefully the instructor loves her job just as much but has less desire to test us to death.
Good luck to everyone!!
Cheryl
i started my online micro class today, it seems like it will be pretty interesting and somewhat easy. i also had my lab today, and i got a really good instructor(he is head of the bio department). he says he is really laid back, he also said there will be times when we just have to show up to check on our experiments and then leave. he said everyone in his classes makes at least an a or b and that it is rare that you make a "c"! hopefully everything will work out this semester!
We did our first lab on Tuesday night! It was fun. I do have some questions, though. We did some bacterium smears in petri dishes and there are several categories we are supposed to report on. I can find (in my text and lab manual) ideas for recording size, colour, colony shape, edge shape and colony elevation but don't know what kind of answer to give for DENSITY, REFLECTANCE and CONSISTENCY. I see there are methods to do colony/bacteria counts but as we weren't instructed on how to do that, I kind of doubt they expect us to do a direct method for discovering it. I don't necessarily understand the indirect methods for estimating density.
Any input would be appreciated. I am just looking online in some of those sites next to see if I can find what I am looking for. Thanks!
Sorry to be the odd ball everyone, but I absoluted HATED my professor and the first micro class. I am so discoraged, won't get into detail but I am terrified of her.Oh Lord please help!
It's still early....maybe things will get better.
I had micro lab today and it was awful!!!!!!!!!!!
You always seem so much in control and on top of things. Your strength will get you through.
I am terrified of the entire thing, too.
Hang in there!
Okay, answering my own question I guess but all I put for "density" were adjectives along the line of "light -- medium -- high"; for "reflectance," I used one of the adjectives "transparent, translucent and opaque"; for "consistency" -- well, I still didn't exactly know -- we wound up putting "dry gel" ROTFL. Okay ... if anyone actually knows if any of these are remotely right, let me know!... don't know what kind of answer to give for DENSITY, REFLECTANCE and CONSISTENCY.
It was fun going back to check our little "growths" .. we had done 2 samples of different bacteria in broth and 2 different smears in the petri dishes. It all seems pretty unfamiliar (even just observing results) but it was fun to do. Shoot, just thought -- I should have taken a picture. Duh. LOL
Hope everyone else is hanging in there. Our prof is fairly young too (as profs go) and seems nice, although rather aloof. He does seem approachable though.
