Looks for a job in Flight Nursing
I am looking into the flight nursing/medical escort field and I'm not sure where to start. I have >4 years Exp in Trauma/ER/ICU with a Level II trauma hospital in SO FL. I have many certifications including TNCC, ATCN, NRP & CEN. I have sent my resume to a few places that I have found online but I'm looking for as many opportunities as possible. I'm not afraid to try something new and I'm very excited to learn new things. Before anyone begins to berrate me about looking on the bulletins, I have spent 8 hours on here today just reading posts and my eyes are about to cross!!!. Thanks for any help!

Help Please!! Psychiatric Care in your country.
Thank you for the responses that I received. They were very informative and helped me out tremendously. I also learned something new about your health care system. I had always assumed that your health care system was great, which I am sure it is 100 times better than the system in the US. I turned in my presentation and hopefully will receive feedback shortly from my instructor. Again, i thank both of you very much for your help. Cheryl

Help Please!! Psychiatric Care in your country.
Are there "state" institutions? If so, are most people with mental disorders committed to an institution, or are they treated via outpatient treament? Are drugs prescribed readily for disorders? You stated that it is a Socialized care system that is paid via taxes. What if you are unemployable? Are there ones that do not receive care because they have never paid taxes? I appreciate this! Thank you!

Help Please!! Psychiatric Care in your country.
Hi there! I hope that one of you would be kind enough to help me. I am a nursing student in the United States and I am currently in Psychiatric Nursing. I have a project that is due in the morning and I am at my wits end. Yes I realize this is the last possible moment, but that is an entirely different story. :smackingf I have to interview someone from another country about the Psychiatric care in that country. Could you help me? It would only take a few minutes of your time. I just need to know how it works. What is your perception of care? is the care adequate? Who pays for it? If someone is committed to a hospital or institution, is there a stigma attached to them? Are they shunned from society or is help given to them and then they are introduced back into society after a period of time? Anything at all would help me out tremendously. Thank you very much Cheryl

Injections
UGH! I just typed this nice long response about my experience and I somehow deleted it before it posted. So, I'm going to make this one short and sweet! My study group was lucky enough to be able to practice our sterile technique & injections on a group of fire fighters/paramedics @ the local fire house. It was their idea and they actually allowed us to stick them numerous times. We practiced in the lab on hot dogs and a dummies, but it just isnt the same. It was great experience and now that I'm going into clinicals, I'm not the least bit nervous about injections. Of course, we also recommended a psych eval on each of those fire fighters, but.... :lol_hitti

Uncooperative Lab Partner
My opinion only of course, but nursing school requires alot of energy. POSITIVE ENERGY. if someone is sucking that energy out of you, then get out of the situation. Either by asking him/her what their problem is ( in a nice way of course) or trying to make friends with others in your lab class and slowly gravitating towards them. I wouldnt say suck it up at all because I think she'll bring you down. I am not the most eloquent speaker, so I wont give you advice on what to say, because I'd just tell her to get lost:uhoh21: . Talk to your instructor in private and see what advice they have for you. Good luck!

NLN Anyone??? A LIL Venting, ADVICE HELP!
First of all calm down LOL. You need to be aware that the NLN scoring sheet has many figures on it. Which figure is required to be a 100? I have attached an actual NLN scoring sheet so you can see what it looks like. This was the example given to us by our Nursing Dept. My school uses the Composite Percentile Score for ADN (which shows as 72) Our requirement is atleast 50 on that. I got a 93 . As for the pre-req's, I would just go buy the $25 NLN study guide (at any major book store) and study that. The NLN has 4 testing areas. Vocab, Reading Comp, Math (geometry, basic algebra and ALOT of ratio and Percentage problems) Science (involves weather (barometric pressures, etc), electricity (OHMS) and some Chemistry. I have never taken Chem in my life and I totally suck at Math, but i studied that guide ( I think the author is Mary McDonald) and you see what my score was. I can't help you with the CNA question, although my first class is Fundamentals, which teaches basically what a CNA has to do. I was told by my mentor that once i complete Fundamentals, I can get a job at any hospital as a CNA to help supplement my income thru school. Now, your school may be different, but the 1st thing I would recommend is contacting the Nursing Dept of your school, not the local hospitals. The school will have some one that can help guide you in your decisions. Make sure to talk to the Nursing Dept though and not just a guidance counselor, as some guidance counselors dont have the inside scoop on certain programs.. Good luck and don't get discouraged!! How many don't make it out?
My program has a 100% pass rate for the NCLEX. What I dont know is how many actually make it to the end. That isnt something that my school readily admits too. They are very committed to our success though. We are assigned a "Mentor" on the day of orientation and that instructor stays with us during the entire program. They review our test scores and if we are not doing well, they intervene and find ways to help you study. I do know that this past semester we had 223 applicants and only 80 were chosen. AND LPN's, Paramedics and Resp Therapists have first refusal. They will not even look @ your transcript unless you have completed Micro and A&PII before application. The only pre-reqs they allow during the program are Nutrition and Human Development. I know 4 people that were accepted as "Alternates" and are now accepted in the program. The orginal accepted students must not have passed fingerprinting or drug testing. I was told by a 2nd yr student that the drop out rate is 50%, but I don't know how true that is. I just know that it is hard work and you have to be determined in order to do well. As another poster mentioned, this is not a scholastic choice that will allow you to just "skate" thru. And I don't want a nurse that just "skated thru" treating me anyway. I want him/her to be as knowledgeable as possible, because I'm counting on their help!

online
I personally have never run across an online Rn program. Honestly I would be petrified if I was being treated by a person that got their RN degree online. You have to learn the fundamentals of the career with hands on experience. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the subject matter. There are many online options for the RN->BSN and such as the last poster stated.

ATTENTION: Prenursing students who did well on the NLN exam
i'm not sure which score your school will use but mine uses the ad composite score and i scored a 93 on it.(which i was told was pretty good) i bought the nln study guide off of amazon (used) and just studied it a few times. my school also provides free refresher courses once a week for 6 wks before the test is administered. honestly, if you can read and have pretty good grammar skills you will score fine in that area. (although there were some pretty wierd vocab words on mine) you do need to be up to date a bit on chemistry, geometry and tons of ratios and proportions. (mine anyway) i also had a couple of questions about weather and electricity. good luck!!!

Microbiology Hell...what would you do?
I am in the same position with my Micro class. My professor is extremely knowledgable in her field and has written many articles and studies. She has said that she is "of a higher intelligence than most" and she is hard hard hard. There are 4 of us that have gone thru classes together and the lowest GPA between us is 3.18. (2 of them have a 4.0) ALL of us have a low B or high C average in her class. The class averages on her tests are in the low to mid 70's each time. The problem is that in order to get into our ADN program, it's on a point system and this Micro class could be the determining factor for acceptance. C=3 pts, B=9pts A=12pts. You arent teaching anything if your students arent learning! This isnt a day class with a bunch of high school grads either. We are all over the age of 30!. She doesnt go over the exams even though our final is cumulative. We have quizzes each week and she is on a very strict schedule and if our questions during class begin to affect her schedule, she wont answer them. She has said that her classes have been compared to Graduate level Micro classes. Like I said, she's very knowlegeable, but I think she has forgotten that she was a student once also. The entire class can not wait for the instructor review sheets to come out..

Who's still waiting on "THE LETTER"
The program I applied to only takes 84 students out of about 300 applicants. We took the NLN on March 7th and I just rec'd my scores in the mail last week. The acceptance process is on a point system with the NLN score + the grades you rec'd from your required pre-req's. Your % score has to be higher than 50 just to be considered. I have spoken to a few people that have been accepted with lower scores than mine, so I'm hoping that's a good thing. We have to have completed A&PI and II and Micro before entering the program. I have not completed A&PII which means I'll be taking that in the summer It all sounds very confusing to me. They wont be sending out our letters until the middle of April . Waiting is hell. I have no Plan B and this is the only local ADN program. Fingers are crossed.
