I was just curious if everyone is finding jobs? I personally only applied for one hospital as there are 4 within 30 miles from me, but the one I applied for is the closest. Everyone in my class including myself started applying in January and most of us interviewed in Feb. I haven't got a call yet but they said they would be calling this week....I am crossing my fingers!!!
Anyhow I know that everyone around here is pretty much not having a problem but I didn't know what it was like in other areas.
Whats the pay like?
benifits?
reimbursements?
The position I applied for actually is on the lower end of the pay scale, but the benefits and reimbursement outway what the other hospitals offer. So what factors did you calculate when finding your first job as an GN.
Hey Everyone,
I'm in SoCal and worried about getting a job. I graduate in May and have been applying to hospitals all across LA. The economy seems to have really affected the jobs available. I'm just really worried and it's very upsetting because I'm at the top of my class and didn't think I'd be worried about landing a job after school! Any idea if the job market is any better after graduating and passing the NCLEX? I've spoke with other people who graduated in December and are still trying to land a job! My husband has been putting a lot of pressure on me to land a job and I've just been stressing. Anyone have advice? I know someone who works at a hospital about 40 miles away, but I wasn't all that impressed with the physical layout of the hospital. It is older and felt a bit claustrophobic. Should I just take anything that is offered to me at this point?

One thing I noticed in my job market (not California) is that there are plenty of RN jobs around, but they don't want new grads--they want at least a year's experience. IMO, it may be worth it to take that job and rack the experience up.
I've been on two interviews so far - I was declined for one job; I interviewed well but they offered it to someone with 22 years experience and I still haven't been able to get in touch with the other NM.
I have an interview tomorrow for a job I'm really interested in, and I know there will be jobs at both of the hospitals I work at, but not in the specialty I want most: peds! Tomorrow is @ a peds hospital.
I'm fortunate that the hospital I've been at for over four years as a monitor tech is creating an ICU internship *just* for me. It isn't 100% official yet, but the job proposal has been submitted by my director.
Market: Houston
GN Pay: $25.00/hr
As a plan B I've applied at 6 other hospitals in the area, with no luck so far. Very few of my classmates have secured jobs either.
I'm starting to apply now but the market is bare here (Iowa). Most places have job freezes or are laying off. It's pretty bad. I've been applying in hospitals in NC but have been hearing that it is bad out there too. I'm just so frustrated. I went back to school to be a Nurse in part because I wanted a secure job no matter where I went and now look at what's happening. But my instructor told me that she has seen this before and said that it will come back and get better, and that we will be okay. I hope she is right. I too am also one of the top students in my class and I speak Spanish fluently. You would think I'd have an advantage but everyone is struggling. Good luck to all and hang in there, we will see the light sooner or later. BE POSITIVE!!!
Should I just take anything that is offered to me at this point?
Of course, no one can tell you what to do. But my intention is to take whatever I can get, in order to get the required experience. Unfortunately, it's not a good market for new grads, so we'll probably have to suck it up and take what we can get. Gee, it seems like yesterday when I was hearing about new grads getting signing bonuses. What a difference a recession makes! :chuckle
I'm near Pittsburgh and can't find a job! I know that the area is crawling with nursing schools but I never thought it would be this tough. I never thought I would utter the words I'm a nurse and can't find work. I just applied with UPMC five different floors at presby, but I have to say, I'm not hopeful for any call-backs. This sucks!

I graduate in May and I am in MI. Luckily I have worked as a nurse tech for the past 2 years so my current hospital is going to hire me, in the ER. I also applied to pretty much every hospital in the metro detroit area and out of state (AZ,CA,FL,NC,SC - warm!). I have had no call backs from any hospital in MI, but I went to NC to interview and had a call from CA and SC and FL. Those three said they are interviewing in April so I assume to hear something further from them. I really want the job I interviewed for in NC although it would be a major pay cut. New grads at my hospital start at 25.50 with 8% nights and 5% weekend differential. At the hospital in NC the starting pay was 20.50-ish but there was a way higher shift differential. Close to 20%. Plus they have relocation bonus and will pay a huge chunk of my loans. It's surprising to me that I have heard more from the out of state places vs. in state. But I am thankful I already have a job lined up if the out of state thing doesn't work out. It's crazy to hear that December graduates are still looking for jobs. I started applying end of January. About the only thing I have learned is that being a new grad nurse, you have just as hard of a time as any other person fresh out of college looking for a job. But once you have a year under your belt, your pretty much free to go wherever you want. I think last year at this time was a whole different story! I know people who moved out of state and were offered huge bonuses, and now none of those places are hiring! Good luck to everyone!
