May 2009 Graduates!!! Do you have a job yet?

Published

I was just curious if everyone is finding jobs? I personally only applied for one hospital as there are 4 within 30 miles from me, but the one I applied for is the closest. Everyone in my class including myself started applying in January and most of us interviewed in Feb. I haven't got a call yet but they said they would be calling this week....I am crossing my fingers!!!

Anyhow I know that everyone around here is pretty much not having a problem but I didn't know what it was like in other areas.

Whats the pay like?

benifits?

reimbursements?

The position I applied for actually is on the lower end of the pay scale, but the benefits and reimbursement outway what the other hospitals offer. So what factors did you calculate when finding your first job as an GN.

I have applied to 15 hospitals in Philly, central PA, MD, DE and NC. All but two have told me that they are not hiring GNs, only experienced RNs. No interviews yet. One of the two that is planning on hiring GNs will not hire a GN once they are 6 months past graduation. I'm beginning to think it might be better to delay graduation, drop out this semester and go back and graduate next year when the economy has improved. Craziness... and I have a 3.9 GPA and a Master's degree in chemistry.

I have applied to one hospital and only put that I wanted to work on ONE floor. I put application in on a Friday and got a call the following Monday. I had an interview about a week later. (This past Tue) I should hear w/in a month if I got the job. It's where I go to school at and it's the floor I'm currently on. The drive is about 45mins which stinks but I like the idea of staying at the hospital I'm comfortable with till I "get" nursing a little more.

Pay for GN $19.57.

Pass the boards $19.57

$2000 sign on bonus

Benefits are good and insurance is cheaper for my family then we are paying now.

Leslie, have you checked with the pharmaceutical companies? I know a lot of them are consolidating and not hiring right now, but with your RN *and* the MS in Chemistry, you might be an attractive candidate in their clinical trials division. Just a thought. Good luck with the job hunt! I'll be looking in the Philly area this time next year. :uhoh21:

LOL, December grads still looking for jobs here in Jersey. Got an offer to start at 27.63, not my first choice, but you know I am all over it if nothing else comes up!! No one is hiring new grads, and I mean no one. Not even LTC.

Is that 27.63 at a hospital? What part of Jersey are you from? I'm from South Jersey, Gloucester County.

South Jersey, burlington county. Yes it is a hospital. They are not hiring any more new grads right now, I was just in the right place at the right time.

Specializes in ER.

I applied for the VA, but they take forever and I haven't heard back. I applied for a ER job too and am thinking of applying for a neuro ICU job.

Leslie, which hospitals are the ones hiring GNs?

I am also suprised to hear the starting rate for GNs isnt as high as I thought. Compared to nurses who graduated last year the pay went down 3-4$ an hour, and no one offers sign on bonuses this year. I'm in Western Pa and interviewed today for a position that starts out at 20.50, only 1.00 shift differential for evenings, nothing for weekends, 12 hour shifts, you get a 5 % pay raise after 6 months, but you have to pass your boards and have a good review to get it. If they offer it to me I might have to take it cause no one else seems to be hiring GNs they all want atleast a year experience, but how are you supposed to get that year in if no one will hire you??

I graduate in May and just received an offer at the VA in Missouri 22.23 an hour 10 percent nights and 25 percent on weekends. I'm thrilled, a girlfriend in my class 65 applications and 2 interviews and no job. Only two in my class of 45 have jobs that were not techs prior. Good luck to all.
