Hello

I plan to work 12 hours night shift when I graduate in 2007. Just curious how many break(s) will be given? Also, how long is your break?

Any input will be appricated!

Hi,

I had about 20 minutes for lunch/dinner [depending on the shift].

And about two 15 minute breaks before and after lunch/dinner.

And I'd also manage to sneak a quick 5 'smoke break' here and there.

Ofcourse, you do realise that all this is therotical - good luck taking regular breaks! ;)

Somedays you make 'em, somedays you don't.

Thanks,

Matthew

At the hospital I work at, you're supposed to get 2 10 minutes breaks and a 30 minute break. No smoke breaks and you can't smoke on the 10 minute ones. Most of the time I get my 30 minute break, but I don't fool with the other two.

I only take a 30 minute lunch break. I also get two 5 min breaks, but I just have the time to take them.

On nights we get 2 15 min breaks with no lunch. That is for 7P to 7A shift. I guess they figure we dont need a lunch since we may have time to sit and eat a bite on the unit depending on census.

One 30 minute break in a 12 hour shift.

1 hour lunch with lunch coverage assigned by charge nurse. 1-2, 5-15 min. breaks if pt. load permits.

Anybody from California, do you get your breaks?

In Phoenix I got 1 30 min break

From Cali and get my breaks. It's supposed to be one 30 minute and three 10 minute breaks, but we usually just take two 30 minute breaks. I personally don't think one break in 12 hours is enough.

When I worked 12 hours at the hospital, we were entitled to 2 fifteen minute breaks and a one hour lunch break.

Now what usually happened was:

1 eight minute break, IF were found the time, and

1 ten to twelve minute lunch (wolf that food down!)

We didn't want to watch anyone else's patients for an hour (in addition to our own)

Nor did we want to "burden" anyone with OUR patients for that long.

....just part of the reason I left....

Breaks? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: What are those?

I've most generally always worked evenings or nites - occasionally we would sit for a few minutes to wolf something down, and still be chewing when we walked to answer another lite!

I recently went to 3rd shift at a LTC facility, thinking it would be less stressful. Silly me!;) My breaks are when I actually get to sit and chart.

I stopped smoking the second year in nursing school when it dawned on me that I'd get little opportunity to go outside.
