Hey man.
I am a gay male nursing student and haven't experienced much trouble at all. I work in an ICU and all the staff know my orientation. They try setting me up on dates and it's totally relaxed and welcoming.
As far as in the nursing program, I think it makes a few of the guys I'm around a bit uneasy, but everyone is friendly and respectable.
I don't bring it up unless I am specifically asked about it.
I'm gay and about to finish an ADN program. No one has ever made disparaging remarks, student or teacher. I've never really went out of my way to make it known at any clinical sites but if the staff knew, they didn't mention it. For what it's worth, I live in rural-ish Oklahoma so that's saying something.
PS: You should change your avatar to something that isn't a picture of you. Potential employers, your school, people who don't like you, or anyone really who knows you could identify you on here from your pic.
We have one young man in our unit who is pretty "out" and accepted, in a position of leadership. We have a couple of ladies I believe might be, but they are not out. It is not an issue among the staff but I suspect that some parents (we are NICU) are not as accepting. It varies a lot, and is changing towards more accepting.

And all this time I thought you were a nurse with 4 years experience. And I would have NEVER known from your avatar that you are gay.:)
Glad to hear the gay male nurse thing is no big deal. (as it should be)
I've only had one instance. It was with the African students. I think they're very homophobic over there so when they come over here and it's a different environment, they're not used to it. They don't disparage me or anything, but on one occasion one of them did say "it's not right" but I just ignored it.

This has probably been talked about before but I am just curious. Anyone out there that is a gay male? Have you felt any type of discrimination as a nursing student or in the work place? I am a new nursing student starting in the fall and it crosses my mind sometimes.
