Make up...?

Published

Hi everyone! :specs:

I know this would be silly but I would like to hear your opinion about make up :p Nurses should look good and are well groomed right? But is make up really a necessary part of good grooming? It's because our clinical instructors require us to wear make up  but I do not wear make up. If I do, I'll just get irritated and may not be able to work well. What do you think? :icon_roll

I think its crazy that they would require makeup. BUT, if you have to, try Bare Escentuals. I've been working a sweaty lab job for years to pay my way through school, and even with a mask on it doesn't sweat off. Its also the only thing that doesn't make me break out in hives.

I agree about seeing if there is actually a POLICY that REQUIRES you to wear make up. I have never heard of such a thing and personally find it to be ridiculous!! I wore make up in school and still do, but it is very light and usually wore off by the end of the night.

What type of make up specifically??

Foundation? base? lipstick? YIKES!!!

Me, I cant leave the house without mascara, have those blond eyelashes, and if I dont have any one, it looks as if I am one sick puppy myself.

But to REQUIRE wearing it???

Very scary thought, as other posters have commented, as long as the guys have to do it too.....

Uh, is that LEGAL? I can understand for models and can even see the stretch for the casinos - but NURSES???

I'd go without if that was my nortmal look, and if they said anything, I think I'd call a lawyer - legal advice is generally FREE.

That can't POSSIBLY be legal!

are you SERIOUS?? they cant make you wear make up!! I have a friend who is allergic to cosmetics and even most lotions, so how could they enforce that??? it would be like saying you all have to be blonde !!!!!!!!

There is a huge difference between wearing makeup and being well-groomed.

I have observed some nurses who do no project a professional appearance because their uniforms are wrinkled, their hair is disheveled, etc. However, this happens to many of us at the end of a long, busy day :) I make an attenpt during my break to try to "put myself back together" as much as possible, but I certainly do not reapply makeup (not that I wear much in the first place).

The faculty may be trying to prevent students from looking "sloppy" by requiring that they wear makeup. From a feminist perspective, this policy is totally insulting. As others have said, are they going to make the guys wear makeup too? If I were a guy I would go in with heavy blue eyeshadow and red lipstick just to help my female classmates make a point.

If they are concerned about their school's image, then they should focus on grooming and not appearance. As my mother has often said (she's in health care too), "we are not here to try to win a beauty contest."

Maybe the entire class should show up one day in clown face....

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Classic!! That sounds like the best bet!! I do look like a clown when I wear make up because I am just NO good at putting it on.

Nope, the guys are not required to put on make up.

I really do not like being forced to put on make up. It's because what's the use of beauty without the brains and the skills to do what a nurse does, right? I admit that I'm not that good looking as my classmates, and I'm kind of tomboyish (NOT lesbian), but some people just think of making themselves look beautiful and are not serious with learning the nursing skills and concepts. Heheh, I really don't know. On the first day of our duty, I'm thinking not putting make up on. If they put me on the demerit logbook, then they've crossed the line.

I just noticed that you are in the Phillippines (the demerit logbook thing tipped me off...). Such a requirement would not go over very well here in the U.S. - obviously by the responses you've gotten so far - but I'm not sure what your recourse would be there. Here, the biggest point in your favor would be that the rules are not applied equally to both male and female students. Not knowing how these things work in your country, I don't really know what else to tell you.

I think that it is a tad controlling to force your employees to wear make-up. I personally think that it should be a choice. That is just me

I will tell you that the Circuit Court that covers Las Vegas recently ruled that a casino was permitted to require make-up on its female employees who had direct customer interaction. Specifically a bartender. Not sure if this would apply to your location/situation, just sayin what I know.

I can actually understand how they might require that because in Vegas a glamourous image is important to the whole area. But nursing? That would be ridiculous.

I just don't see how makeup can improve patient care.

I sure hope the Vegas laws don't pertain to healthcare.

i understand with rules pertaining to grooming. as a professional, you should be well groomed. this means a neat, unwrinkled uniform, clean, tidy hair, clean shaven (or at least a tidy beard or goatee), and bathed (i had a colleague that would not shower for a few days. eventually they were called on it.). no one wants a dirty looking employee. and do patients really want someone taking care of them that looks like they just rolled out of bed after a night of drinking?

having said that....i do not agree that make up should be required. a person can look very clean cut and professional without make up.
