Make up...?

Hi everyone!

I know this would be silly but I would like to hear your opinion about make up Nurses should look good and are well groomed right? But is make up really a necessary part of good grooming? It's because our clinical instructors require us to wear make up but I do not wear make up. If I do, I'll just get irritated and may not be able to work well. What do you think? :icon_roll

I think it's ridiculous for them to require you to wear makeup! It was just the opposite when I was in clinicals...we were warned NOT to wear too much makeup, could only have clear fingernail polish, etc.

I personally don't wear makeup, persay, but I do wear a little concealer under my eyes, some bronzer and mascara so that my patients won't think that some living dead zombie from the morgue is caring for them. :)

Do your instructors require you to wear full war paint? Or can you get away with some tinted moisturizer and mascara and clear lipgloss?

Personally, when I was in nursing school I wouldn't be caught dead without it, but having been in the real nursing world for so long, any make-up I put on was very likely sweated off before the end of my shift, so now I don't wear it.

OMG... I don't wear makeup at all...I find it very uncomfortable and irritating. If my eyes are dark ...oh well...I work nite shift!!!! Blame it on the lites.

I honestly don't see how your instructor or future boss could make you wear it!!! Just my 2 cents

ACK!!!!! A lot of my clinicals were dealing with the geriatric population that seem to like to keep their rooms the temperature of the sun. By the time I'm done with their a.m. ADL's I'm dripping. If I had to wear makeup doing that, I'd end up looking like Tammy Faye after she cried. Either that, or some Stephen King clown character.

Our clinical instructors didn't care either way, but it in no WAY was required, that's rediculas. Why would they say that?? They trying to play instructor/match maker?

I would check and see if there is actually a policy stating that you have to wear make-up.

Thats rediculous. I dont wear make up, never have. Have no clue how to put it on. I'll look like a crazy woman coming into a patients room if I had to wear makeup. Not to mention I break out from most make-ups....

I will tell you that the Circuit Court that covers Las Vegas recently ruled that a casino was permitted to require make-up on its female employees who had direct customer interaction. Specifically a bartender. Not sure if this would apply to your location/situation, just sayin what I know.

Thanks very much for your replies. At least I fell assured that I don't have to work with make up on me at the hospital :) Our teachers make us wear only light make up but still, it irritates me. I also easily perspire. The make up will just wear out. I do understand that they want us to look presentable to the patient and for us not to look like patients :chuckle But I wouldn't want to be thinking about my make up instead of taking care of the patient.

Many of my nursing instructors did not wear makeup themselves.

As students, we were allowed to wear it but not by any means required. It did have to be subtle, though, you couldn't go to clinicals looking like a chorus girl.

We couldn't wear perfume, colored nail polish, have nails past the tips of our fingerst, etc. etc. but we also wore caps!

You have to wear make up. This is exactly why I did not go into nursing my first round at college. This plays right into the pretty girl looking for a husband picture. I would think you are there to take care of the patients, not to be a gussied up looking for a date.

Nope, the guys are not required to put on make up.

I really do not like being forced to put on make up. It's because what's the use of beauty without the brains and the skills to do what a nurse does, right? I admit that I'm not that good looking as my classmates, and I'm kind of tomboyish (NOT lesbian), but some people just think of making themselves look beautiful and are not serious with learning the nursing skills and concepts. Heheh, I really don't know. On the first day of our duty, I'm thinking not putting make up on. If they put me on the demerit logbook, then they've crossed the line.
