Ok... I've been reading couple of topics regarding LPN pay... It's really low to the point where I don't think it's worth working getting paid less than $20. Even pharmacy technicians make close to $16/hr in illinois. So... I wonder... When you go on interview, do you ask for pay first? or how does this work? Can you negotiate? I really can't afford to get paid 14-18 dollars an hour. I was expecting as low as $21. This is scary...
the dollar amt is not all that needs to be considered. you also need to factor in a benefits pkg., that is if you are lucky enough to get one.
vacation, sick leave, retirement, and medical/dental coverage can often times equal 20%-30%+ of compensation. do not under estimate the value of these.

When I originally wrote that, I didn't realize how out to lunch our wages looked, but the reality is we do start that high. As well, in the health region that I work, if we start out as aides we actually do get to carry that seniority over to LPN. Doing that math, if you work as an aide for 2 years while you're in school (our LPN course is the old 2 year RN course) that means you start at the middle pay range for LPN, $32.10/hr.
In Florida ,pay ranges from 15-27 dollars an hr, and i'm sure , even more than that in certain situations. I am getting the 27 from a coworker who was just offered that recently. It was in a nursing rehab center. As far as negotiation of pay, to me it depends on your experience and what you have to offer the facility . I usually ask about pay toward the end of an interview if it isn't disclosed. If your new, you don't have any bargaining power and just finding someplace that will hire you may be difficult.

I can't agree with you more, yet it also is part of my career and if I can make enough money to provide my family in the future will be whole lot better. Also I am looking forward to continue my education while working as an LPN, so I do stress the rate of pay.
