Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I hopefully am about to begin an lpn course and wanted to know what is the average starting wage for a lpn who just graduated. stats i read say 18 dollars and hour, and i wanted to know if that is accurate. i live in NWI, and i think nurses make less here anyway. i love the nursing field having been a cna and didnt know whether to choose lpn or surgical technologist, i liked both and was going to pick which ever made more. help!

It truly depends on where you live and work.

LPNs in rural Louisiana can earn as little as $10.50 hourly, whereas LPNs/LVNs in New York City or San Francisco can earn as much as $28 hourly. I am an LVN in Texas who earns $18.50 at a nursing home.

RNs only start at $18.75 an hour here. LPNs make around $13 I think.

Here in MD LPNs make anywhere from 20-25$/hour, Agency LPNs make 30-32$/hour depending on day and shift. That's alot more than some staff RNs make.

It not only depends on what part of the country you live in, but where you work also. I live in southeastern PA and LPNs in hospitals start out around $12/hr, LTC start anywhere from $16-24/hr and agency can make up to $28/hr. I just started my job in LTC and my starting salary was $18/hr.

I live in MA and start a job in a sub-acute rehab for $19 base $24 w/ diffs - no experience. I hear agency w/ experience is roughly $34ish and Per Diem around $28-32ish

There are so many variables for wages.

This is a link to the median wages for LPNs in all states. Keep in mind that median includes all levels of experience, metro & rural area, LTC and acute care. http://www.acinet.org/acinet/wages3.asp?optstatus=110000000&id=1,11&nodeid=2&soccode=292061&stfips=01&jobfam=29

I do not know how accurate the site is for LPN wages, I do know that in a discussion with a small group of RNs that it was pretty accurate for our locations.

Here in my part of Ohio, the starting wages are between $15-$17.50 an hour. If you drive out about a half hour, toward Cleveland, a new grad makes $18.50-19.50!

I am a new graduate PN going to take the nclex this friday. I am located in West Virginia the lowest wage I had heard for a LPN in this area was 10.00 hrly at a local nursing home and goes up to around 14.00 hrly at a different nursing home and the local hospitals. This past week though I had a interview at a local chain of doctors offices during this interview I was asked my expected wage. When I said around 10.00 hrly they acted like they were shocked. They did not tell how much they do pay at this 1st interview but said that 10.00 hrly was to much to ask for in this area!!
