I was taking classes for my BSN and have now decided to enter an LPN class and then go on to the RN- I start clinical in the fall and will graduate with my LPN then another year of clinical and will recieve my RN. My question is that while i was in the BSN program a man told me that he had sat for his LPN having some classes and i believe he was a CNA. He passed the exam and got his license...has anyone ever heard of someone sitting for the lpn exam without having attended a full program? I have clinical experience as medic in the air force and i have a bs in microbiology. I would love to sit for the exam if possible and go forward with the rn program online but i cant see where this could happen?

Doesn't make much sense to me, either. In my state, the school has to actually send a statement to the BON stating that you attended and completed the LPN portion of the program before you can even register.

Was this in the United States or a foreign country? I really dont think this is possible.

I think that after you have completed a certain portion of your RN program that in some states you can sit for the LPN boards and work to get experience while you are in school. You would need to contact your states BON to find out for sure if you are in one of those states. Good luck with school.

It used to be allowed after one year in an RN program, here in NJ. This was years ago. Now you have to have graduated from the a full program before being allowed to take the state boards.

AFAIK, the first year contains clinical components.

Are you in California? You can challenge the Nclex-PN exam if you are a CNA with X amount of experience in different clinical areas. For example, you have to have X amount of hours as a CNA in a med-surg setting, a Peds setting, etc. For that program, you also have to have had a formal pharmacology class. This program is ONLY for CA and is not able to be transfered to another state.

I hope this helps.

I just found the link to that program in CA I was just describing. If anyone is interested, here it is:

In the state of California a person who has been CNA for 5 years and had certain experince as set forth by the Californi Board of Vocational Nursing may sit for the NCLEX PN exam. It's right on our website. I was a CNA for 4 years but I attended a program and graduated from it. I am now in an LVN to BSN program.

A question I have for you is what made you decide to go first for LPN then to RN when you are already in a BSN program? Just curious. I do hear that RN students are able to sit for NCLEX-PN after a certain portion of their courses, but, this is not every state, in fact, NY just changed this last June. They now are saying that you must complete the entire RN program before you sit for either exam. Being a medic and your BS in microbiology would be a plus for the nursing program; in fact, the medic alone would make the LPN course a breeze, from what I am hearing.

wow what a wonderful response! i will try to respond to many of the posts at once since there are so many. I was attending Widener university in PA and i believe the nurse i spoke of was working in PA so i assume he got his license in PA and that was about 8 years ago. Got pregnant and it was a high risk pregnancy so i was out of school...then kids and well been a stay at home mom since then. The reason i changed programs was i now have a few kids and need to get this done, ti is much cheaper and quicker to go to the LPN program at my local community college and then i could be working at least part time and I will continue for the RN ( actually hoping to eventually get bsn and maybe msn) it will just depend on whether i do it online or at the local cc. I can just continue and get my RN in another year but the hours are really a problem with little kids. my kids dont get the bus til after 8 am and the LPN is 8 am 2 days a week and 9 the other days. i got a neighbor to watch but the RN program starts at 7 am! not sure how that will work.

i appreciate all the responses. i think things have really changed since i was in school before.

L&D is correct about CA. You can challenge the boards but have to have certain criteria and worked in certain areas ... Im curious though how you got into a BSN program w/out having any nursing license? If I am correct here in CA theres no way you can get into a BSN program w out having a nursing license.. and it has to be RN... they wont even accept LVN.... weird how so many states have so many different requirements...
