not looking "put together"

Published

I have been guilty of this as well.......occasionally

Do most nurses have trouble looking "put together" at work?-hair out of their eyes, 'fuzzy' eyebrows-the list goes on.

I think I have co-workers that truly try to look their worst at work-rumpled scrubs, etc.

Do you see the same thing?

I've learned over the years that appearances really do not mean much. There was once an RN who always looked spectacular, hair right from the salon, nails that were french manicure and near perfect, uniform pressed, make up flawless. I thought at first, this woman is dang near perfect!

Well fast forward just a few months later. Major narcotic issue. They set up a camera, and guess who was caught!

I would of never guessed at the time that someone who looked so put together could have issues that big. Lesson learned.

I have the most wonderful job in the world. I work in the OR. I go into work with little or no makeup because my face will be covered with a mask, I have my freshly washed hair pulled up in a cap, and I get to change into scrubs provided by the OR. I am showered, teeth brushed, and I can go from bed to car in about 30 minutes. The patients have been given Versed, so they won't remember how I look.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that I am smarter, have a better personality and I am younger than my co-workers?!?

HA! Love it Lotte!

I'm a new RN. I'm also wound up pretty tightly and have a certain routine I need to complete before I feel ready for work. So my scrubs are ironed, my hair is fixed, and I am wearing makeup when I leave the house. Yes, I have a life, a husband, children, a house, dogs, etc., but I make time.

When I leave the hospital, I am sweaty, my hair is every which way, my makeup is long gone, I probably stink and my scrubs are dirty and rumpled...

Still, I repeat the process the next day. I must be a glutton for punishment.

I have found that looking nice, clean and professional--yes, pretty--let's face it--is more of a positive than negative.

I may get scalded for this but the ones who are not as "put together" seem to get worse treatment than those who are "put together."

Yes, it is discrimination against the "not so put together".

It seems that the more effort I put into my appearance, the more satisfaction my patients get from spitting on me. Just saying.

LOL! :clown:

Hell, I don't even own an iron.

I'm not arching my eyebrows and putting on makeup to come to work. As long as I have bathed, my scrubs are pressed, and my teeth brushed...I'm good. As far as I'm concerned, they better be glad I even show up to work....seeing as how I'm tempted to call out all the time (I don't, but I think about it...:))Quite frankly I don't care what the nurse looks like as long as it's professional...and most of all I care that he/she is competent. Plus, do we really need to feed into the naughty (sexy) nurse stereotype...sometimes I see scrubs so tight...that it looks like the pants will split if she sits down too fast....it can go both ways....it's bad enough we have patients that ask us for sex already...why make it worse.

Yes,I'm one of those.I no longer get up to wash my hair in the morning and put my make up on.I'm just so exhausted but I really dont care as I long I provide a good care for my patients!

So getting your eyebrows waxed is now a requirement for being an RN? Jeez.

I dont even wax my eyebrown,I have a thick medium brown eyebrowns and I love them!

Honestly, I WISH I had the time to get my eyebrows done (and my nails, toes, get a facial occasionally, etc...) I get up 2 and 1/2 hours before work at it is and get kids ready and drop kids off at daycare/before school care, make lunches, and feed and let the dogs out. I barely have time to take a shower, put my hair up and throw on a little makeup. I don't remember the last time I had my hair cut -- it's longer than it's ever been. I work 40 hours a week and am in grad school part time with kids, a husband and dogs. Something has gotta go, and right now, it's my appearance. I'm clean, my teeth and hair are brushed, and I've covered up my dark circles. That's as good as it gets right now!

I used to be one of those super put-together types. Sometimes I do feel like people look at me a little differently now that I am not as much that way...it's a little judgmental, really. People have different standards for their appearance and it's not fair to project your values on to other people.

Knew that would cause a stir :D

we watched Breakfast At Tiffany's recently. Hepburn's eyebrows were way bushy by modern standards. I'll keep mine, thanks.

bushy is one thing--unabrow is another
