not looking "put together"

Published

I have been guilty of this as well.......occasionally

Do most nurses have trouble looking "put together" at work?-hair out of their eyes, 'fuzzy' eyebrows-the list goes on.

I think I have co-workers that truly try to look their worst at work-rumpled scrubs, etc.

Do you see the same thing?

I think Wooh was kidding. On the other hand, maybe Lotte was too (?)

It seems that the more effort I put into my appearance, the more satisfaction my patients get from spitting on me. Just saying.

I personally avoiding fixing myself up to much before work. I'm already smarter and have a better personality than my coworkers. I'm also younger than many of them. If I put on makeup and spent extra time on my hair before work, well then I'd be more beautiful too.

And we all know what happens when you're smarter, younger, nicer, and prettier than your coworkers....

:lol2::lol2::yeah:

I think wooh was being sarcastic...LOL...I am a nursing student right now, and I do iron my uniform, but I don't put any makeup on. Whatever, the job is not to look pretty, right? Who cares?

From Lotte: "Wooh... your comment is not appropriate. You are 35. Not young, and from your post, not necessarily smarter or even nicer."

Oh my.

Can you say tongue in cheek?

I can say my eyebrows sometimes get fuzzy. I do not wear make up as it rubs off or gets on my scrubs or smears.

I do shower, clean scrubs, and make sure I do not smell. I am not there to be a beauty queen, I am there to work and if that is not enough then oh well. I am not there to impress or pick up anyone, only to impress with the care I give.

Sure, I am kidding... but when a patient asks me how old I am and how long have I been an RN, they never reply... well I'd rather have a younger more attractive nurse!

Admittedly, I do not have a uni-brow.

Wooh is a hottie folks, fact. How do you think she got her name?!?!?! (Wooh ...duh)

BTW, so am I. But I don't dress it down. I let it flow.

Oh Wooh!!!! Love it!

The big umbrella hospital organization here doesn't hire nurses who don't appear 'put together', and they're my largest job resource, employing a few thousand nurses in the area.

While I certainly don't think it's indicative of one's ability as a nurse, if having unwrinkled scrubs and taking a little more time with my appearance in the morning keeps me in a job in this economy, I'm all for it.

I don't go to any extremes - neat ponytail or bun, light makeup, no perfume. It's not difficult or time consuming.

Specializes in Pediatrics, ER.

Yes, and I'm one of those frumpy nurses. I'm always exhausted from rotating shifts, it takes me hours to feel fully awake, my eyes and face are swollen from allergies when I wake up, and I don't like to look in the mirror because I have this weird thing about looking at my eyes when they're red and puffy. I shower after work so I can't do anything with my frizzy wavy hair in the morning. Coworkers can't believe I'm the same person when they see me out of work dressed up and put together. I've never been spoken to about my looks at work and it doesn't affect the nursing care I give, so it's a nonissue.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the humor tab?
