Do you stay after school ends with a sick student or leave them in the front office? As I am writing this I have a student in my office who has been waiting over 1 1/2 hours to get picked up. School ended 45 minutes ago. Just wondering what everyone else does. BTW I do not get paid once school is over. Here comes a parent of the year award!

I have done a couple of different things - really depends on what I have scheduled at the end of the day. I have stayed with a student till parents have picked them up, I have had them sit in the principal office if I needed to leave at my scheduled time and I have also sent them onto the daycare (if they attended one of the 2 programs we have on our campus). At this point if your principal or AP are around I would get them involved - especially if you are not getting paid for it.

I have to stay until a designated time. My hours are 7:20 to 3:50. We are on contract so no hourly pay here.

If it is something that needs medical observation, I'll stay and can usually get comp time for it. If not, when it gets close to the end of the day I'll notify an administrator and ask which one of them I should send the student to. :roflmao:

Unless they are terribly ill, they get put on the bus.

I'm contract too. The nurse who trained me made sure I knew that unless the kid absolutely needs transport (ie something broken) they all need to be out of my office at least 30 minutes prior to dismissal.
And usually starting at the least hour, if someone gets sent to me for a non emergent reason, I send them right back to class.
I need that least hour to chart on all of the day's craziness.

I've had all knowing teachers send me students 5 min before departure because they are "too ill" to ride the bus. I ask which one of the faculty wants to stay and wait for the parent which is usually met with the dumb blank stare. We are all on the same contract and I refuse to be a martyr to my profession. On the other hand I have stayed a few times with a kid who was really ill and the parent far away. An admin has to stay onsite or it's no deal. This is unusual though.

I don't get paid after 2:30, and our kids are dismissed at 2:20....so I run into this a lot. Most times if it's a kid with a fever, but no GI symptoms, I'll leave them with the main office. If they have GI symptoms, and I've been waiting with them for >30 minutes, I bring them to our principal who is the only other person in the building with a bathroom attached to their office. I know he stays until 5 most days, and I know the last thing he wants is to deal with a sick kid. I'm on a punch in/punch out system and have gotten reprimanded by being 2 minutes overtime before because I was on the phone with a parent too long one day after I was supposed to have been clocked out. I've tried to explain that I won't always have time to clock out right at 2:30 and my hope is the more kids I leave with our principal the more he'll advocate for me with our contract change for next year.

i don't get paid overtime if i stay after school so i won't see kids after school unless there is an extreme circumstance. We're not a bussed district, so if a child is still waiting when the dismissal bell rings, they can report to the office.

I work after school (I'm contracted for 9 hours a day, so typically I work until 4:30), so student is usually staying with me. I deal with the older kids, so there is no school bus, just public transportation home, which for a truly sick kid is just torture.
My school is pretty awesome, though. If I really have to leave, I can leave the student with an admin as we have one designated every day that remains until we close. We close our doors at 5 PM, so we have a policy that I will be confirming starting at 4 PM that a parent/authorized by parent in writing pick-up person will be here prior to 5 PM. Sometimes an Uber has picked up a student after school if needed.

It depends, if the student is throwing up or really sick, I will keep them with me until mom comes. But if they are okay, but not feeling well, front office they go to wait with the rest of the other kids.
