Let me be clear: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so ****** OFF right now. There are literally thousands of new grads, like myself, who are struggling ALL OVER THE U.S. who can't find jobs for the life of them. This is absurd!!

I have applied to over 30 jobs and cannot get a single call back. I have spent numerous nights sobbing in my bed because I can't afford my loans starting in December and might have to consider filing bankruptcy. :crying2::bluecry1::crying2::bluecry1:

And now, to hear that a Florida congressman wants to "import" foreign nursing to "combat the current nursing shortage" is more than I can take (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_2536.html). Are you serious? Pleas tell me you're JOKING!!!

Why did I foolishly even consider becoming a nurse in the first place (besides it being my childhood dream)? What a waste of time. :banghead:

Come to Texas. There's definately a shortage here. I currently have 3 open nursing positions that have been open for 2 months that I can't fill.

There is a nursing shortage but there is no budget to hire new grads. We as new grads need more training and time to prepare us to go on the floor. They have to pay us full salary while we sit in a class to learn. we arent even taking care of patients. They also have to pay for benefits for us too. I am a new grad in NY and I know a lot of my classmates dont have jobs! but the reality is that a lot of new grads no matter the major dont have jobs. there is a recession ging on and we as nursing grads are not exempt from it. When the economy turns around there will be more jobs! until then we have to keep applying, volunteer, think out of the box, get our BSN or MSN. We cant give up!

you may have to be wiiiling to relocate to find that first job.. .....the lure of night life and the big city is understandable when you are young but if you need a job, widen your search. .:yeah:

i have come to the realization that moving out of state may be necessary. i have discussed this with my husband and it seems i have no choice. he is ok with me moving away for a year and then come back. however, it seems that i am equally stuck because it seems that most states prefer to hire "in-state" residents over non locals. so if i can't get hired here...and i can't get hired there....then what do i do? it's not like i'm sticking my nose up at out of state jobs. as long as i get paid enough to make the minimum payment on my bills and can afford a studio where i relocate to, i'm fine.

As expensive as new nurses are to hire, foreign nurses cost more.

my facility is hiring new grads, we just hired 4 to the icu i work in. they are very reluctant to hire nurses from outside the area, though, as they keep getting inquiries from new grads that want to put in a year or so and then jet, as "experienced" rns. there are plenty of open rn positions in the pittsburgh area. the other end of the state, not so many...

I think it was just a few months ago that we talked about the "white paper" that they are using to support the idea that there will be a nursing shortage. Here are some of the "facts" that support the idea that a nursing shortage is coming:

1. Nurses are "expected to retire." Wonderful. Did you ASK these people if they PLAN to retire?

2. Doctors offices are expected to increase their hiring of RNs. Sorry. This is just laughable. They hire MAs. Period. End of Story.

3. There is expected to be an increase in the number of positions at nursing homes/LTCs for RNs. I think the trend, again, is to hire aides, not nurses.

There is not a single hard piece of evidence that supports the idea that there is a shortage. EVER.

I think the issue is near and dear to those of us who graduate this year because the shortage was previously projected to peak in 2010-2011 and I think a lot of us just got sucker-punched by the reality in the current market.

Uh, no... we don't.

There's a 5% overall vacancy rate for nurses statewide. For new grads, nearly half are and will remain unemployed. My source is the July, 2009 report from the Calif. Institute for Nursing and Healthcare.

That just seems counterintuitive when the Obama administration is so convinced of a future nursing shortage that it has created initiatives to facilitate nurses to get graduate degrees to become nurse educators in schools of nursing. If there's going to be no need for nurses after health care reform passes, why would the administration that's pushing health care reform also be concerned about the future nursing shortage?

You wouldn't know there's a shortage in my area, if there is. We have been advertising a part-time, flexible hour position for an RN for at least a few months. The only fixed day is Fridays. It's less pay than some shift-work jobs because it's business hours and office-based for the most part. Seems like many people say there are "no jobs" when really, they do not want the jobs on offer. We have interviewed multiple people - some wanted different hours to work around them, some said they wouldn't do certain job requirements, one cancelled the interview a few hours before then wanted to be reinterviewed the week after etc etc...
