Let me be clear: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so ****** OFF right now. There are literally thousands of new grads, like myself, who are struggling ALL OVER THE U.S. who can't find jobs for the life of them. This is absurd!!
I have applied to over 30 jobs and cannot get a single call back. I have spent numerous nights sobbing in my bed because I can't afford my loans starting in December and might have to consider filing bankruptcy.
And now, to hear that a Florida congressman wants to "import" foreign nursing to "combat the current nursing shortage" is more than I can take (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_2536.html). Are you serious? Pleas tell me you're JOKING!!!
Why did I foolishly even consider becoming a nurse in the first place (besides it being my childhood dream)? What a waste of time.
I just can't take this anymore.................
Does ANYONE know about the NLN test for admission to PN? I sure would like some response on that. It's one of the main reasons I joined this blog.....? I know surely someone knows something?NVR2LATE
I'm not trying to be mean, but this is so off topic that I think you would be better off making your own thread to get answers.
Right on, and that's why I am getting into.....time is money, and there is more to life than having an extra appendage (computer) on you. HushDAWG? Are you in Ga, where I can get more info from your wife?
Heh, I'm originally from North Carolina. I live in the Philippines now and my wife has worked as a medical transcriptionist and editor for more than 8 years.
Medical transcription is a huge industry in the Philippines; US companies set up shop here and hire lots of people to do transcribing in the offices and also at-home. The selection for at-home transcription is very strict and they pay slightly less than in-office for transcribing, but slightly more for editing.
The current pay for transcribing is an average of 1 peso per line (25 characters) or 50 centavos per line for editing.
Current exchange rate is 48.5 pesos per dollar. So that would be roughly $1 for 1,200 characters typed.
To put that in perspective a bit: as a couple it costs us about P130 for each dinner meal based on our grocery shopping. The average meal at McDonald's is P100. One Kilo of Rice is about P35. One loaf of bread is about P50. Fare for the train is anywhere from P12 to P16 depending on how far you ride. Monthly rent for an apartment is anywhere from P5000 to P10,000 depending on many factors.
With an attitude like yours I wouldn't hire you. Sounds like you think because you are an RN you are too good to work in LTC--it's not TLC but the way. I have mostly RNs in my building now.
Mermaid,
Is your facility wanting more RNs or is it just because with the economy there are more RNs available and you would just prefer them over an LVN/LPN?
With the complexity of the patients we are getting these days, I feel more comfortable with having mostly RNs. We are very far away from any hospital so I need nurses with excellent assessment skills who can see and react to changes in their patients quickly so we don't have to send them off to the hospital 1.5-2 hours away. Plus...the CMS 5 star rating system in part is based on staffing. It's not just the numbers of nurses, it's the number of RNs. It might not be fair and I know some very knowledgeable LPNs, but I would rather hire RNs.
