Let me be clear: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so ****** OFF right now. There are literally thousands of new grads, like myself, who are struggling ALL OVER THE U.S. who can't find jobs for the life of them. This is absurd!!

I have applied to over 30 jobs and cannot get a single call back. I have spent numerous nights sobbing in my bed because I can't afford my loans starting in December and might have to consider filing bankruptcy. :crying2::bluecry1::crying2::bluecry1:

And now, to hear that a Florida congressman wants to "import" foreign nursing to "combat the current nursing shortage" is more than I can take (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_2536.html). Are you serious? Pleas tell me you're JOKING!!!

Why did I foolishly even consider becoming a nurse in the first place (besides it being my childhood dream)? What a waste of time. :banghead:

I just can't take this anymore.................

I'm a contractor, set my own hours, etc. Have come and gone from this off and all all my career; trying different venues in medical and otherwise. There's always been a need, but more and more outsourcing overseas has me concerned. But what I 'need' is to be in nursing where there has always been more demand than supply. Appreciate your candor, thx :icon_roll

I'm curious, what sort of jobs can you 'contract'? Do you mean as in agency work? I'd like to do something a little different if you wouldn't mind sharing.

Thanks

Medical Transcribing Independent Contractor or for a company, requires 2 years previous in-hospital (trauma sized facility) experience, and/or or a valid course for same. Most companies still require hands on experience before letting you contract independently. Pay is based on production and there are no 'benefits'. And, like I said, most hospitals outsource and much going overseas. Not stable and secure like nursing, which is why I'm here. Hope it helped!

Hope it helps.

My wife is a licensed nurse and also a medical transcription editor; part of the reason that job is outsourced is because only people outside the USA can live on the rate that it pays.

As supplemental income it is fine, but primary income? Forget it.

Right on, and that's why I am getting into :nurse:.....time is money, and there is more to life than having an extra appendage (computer) on you. HushDAWG? Are you in Ga, where I can get more info from your wife? :yeah:

Hushdawg lives in the Philippines.

I know that many medical transcription companies are based off shore. I don't know how they work around the HIPPA training, but that is beyond my radar.

My company is not only USA based, they have been around for 20 years, and they absolute do NOT hire on MT's from out of the states. That's why I am with them. Also, 99% are CMT's. It's unfortunate how many unscrupulous companies (and hospitals) operate these days (no pun intended). I have many nurse practitioners in the family, all who are saying my talents would be better suited to nursing. The prize is hope to do home hospice. I have no desire to ever work in a hospital again (been there, done that). Thx for replying

You would be surprised how much is oversourced, radiology readings, drug companies, US Health Insurance Call Centers, Case Managers, etc. It is the new wave.

I was the DNS at a facility in Massachusetts in a big city. At least 80 % of the nursing staff came from the Phillipines. Why? Because we couldn't find any local nurses who wanted to work in long term care. I can't tell you the number of new grads I had come in for an interview who scoffed at working every other weekend and holidays.:banghead: They looked at me like I had 2 heads when I told them they passed meds and did treatments. So many new grads are prima donnas and somehow believed all the hype about getting a 'dream' job right out of school. That company had a 6 week orientation for new grads, which around here, is unheard of. I still couldn't fill all the open slots I had. I would suggest that you take ANY nursing job you're offered on ANY shift until you get experience.

Of course, after being in the States for several months, the foreign nurses started to complain about working weekends and holidays....must be something in the water.

I did get my "dream job" right out of school, and I worked my butt off for it too...I didn't just goes to nursing school; I have a lot of extra stuff on my resume. However, before I was hired I was applying everywhere as things were looking bad. I too applied to a TLC. I was graduating Cum Laude and as a member of Sigma Theta Tau with my BSN and the TLC never contacted me whatsoever. I am not sure if it is because I have a BSN (I don't think they have more than one RN in the entire building, the place is practicably run by LVNs).

I don't think it is so much that people are not taking shifts that are not as good as others; my friend just got hired per-diem because it was the only thing out there. Maybe your area is an exception, but I can understand why people would not want to work for TLC,if they had their RN. Like I said, the TLC in my area hire LVNs to run everything, it would be a waste of a degree for an RN to work in a TLC; the LVNs have it under control!

Did anyone get a response from their local news or Congresswoman/man? It seems that truly everyone could care less about us new grads!!! :crying2:

Nope. I never heard back from either Congresspeople or the President. I also wrote my governor and my state legislature since we have been discussing nursing education requirements in this state and I have NEVER heard a word back from them!

No word, yet.

That's been my experience on other issues, as well.
