Let me be clear: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so ****** OFF right now. There are literally thousands of new grads, like myself, who are struggling ALL OVER THE U.S. who can't find jobs for the life of them. This is absurd!!

I have applied to over 30 jobs and cannot get a single call back. I have spent numerous nights sobbing in my bed because I can't afford my loans starting in December and might have to consider filing bankruptcy. :crying2::bluecry1::crying2::bluecry1:

And now, to hear that a Florida congressman wants to "import" foreign nursing to "combat the current nursing shortage" is more than I can take (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_2536.html). Are you serious? Pleas tell me you're JOKING!!!

Why did I foolishly even consider becoming a nurse in the first place (besides it being my childhood dream)? What a waste of time. :banghead:

I just can't take this anymore.................

A) What does that have to do with anything in this discussion?

B) Why would you want to even want to start drawing on Philippine Policy as a basis for American Policy?

Although the Republicans would probably LOVE the high levels of graft that it would permit. :p

Full Disclosure:

I am a nurse as well as a consumer. my family lives all over the country. SO the nursing care is important to me.

If I get sick or my kids get sick I want a qualified nurse.

What is in it for you ? You don't live in the USA, you are not a nurse ? I can only think you make a living "marketing" foreign nurses.

And like I can drive my car in any of the 50 states in the USA, I would expect the same respect from a country that has tried to make a profit importing nurses to my country.

Back to the discussion, I would encourage US students to apply to be a nurse, it is a rewarding field. I would also contact your state board of nursing and ask them to tighten up the requirements for foreign trained nurses.

I would think that certain experienced foreign nurses would be happy to take entry-level jobs to get their foot in the door here, which would affect the number of new grad positions.

I don't see why our government can't provide funds for hospitals to train new nurses. Why give it all to the auto makers and financial industry? Our government wants to increase the number of nursing students, which doesn't seem to make sense when new grads can't find jobs.

Several weeks ago I wrote my federal and state representatives to discuss this legislation. I urge others who disagree with importing nurses (versus hiring new grads) to do the same.

I graduated in May and live in New Jersey. I have written letters to congressmen Rob Andrews and have been in contact with the local news. They are very interested in the story. I lost my job as a nurses aid due to receiving my RN license. I am now collecting unemployment. I am starting to feel a little disconnected from the field so I have applied to do my RN to BSN. Pray I am not wasting more money.

Well, there is an option for BSN Rn that can't find a job. Join the Air Force they have a $35,000 sign on bonus plus another $40,000 going to your student loans and whatever is left over from paying off your loans you keep. Just as an option for you.

Yes, but there is a strict age limit, and at 40 years old and just starting my RN, I am too old to qualify! Plus, being single and having young children, it is not an option - what are they going to do when I am sent to Iraq?

UGHHHH!! That article is horribly one-sided. They neglect to offer solutions such as federal grants and loans made available to AMERICANS to promote education for RNs and RNs-to-be. "Just import your nurse from China - help a neighbor." What about OUR economy, which is currently FALTERING!! Yes, a world economy sounded like a good idea years ago, but not if it means neglecting our own potential.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!!! I actually was thiking of doing the same.....hopefully it will educate at least some people as to the fallacy of the "nursing shortage" in the US and the absurdity of this stupid Bill.

You may have to be wiiiling to relocate to find that first job.. I just looked at ouy RN job openings and found at least one in every department and we hire new grads. We are located in SC and there are a lot of sick people here and we did get raises this year. We just sucessfully passed our TJC review and are progressive for a rural area. The lure of night life and the big city is understandable when you are young but if you need a job, widen your search. Good luck froma transplant, gotta love the winter here.:yeah:

I'm wondering if once the economy turns the shortage will be evident. Will a lot of nurses retire then?

If 50% of nurses are expected to retire that's a lot of nurses. I hope they don't all retire at the sametime.

I know that all the nurses where I worked last Summer except one were ready to retire. As a matter of fact, they were planning a retirement party together. They were just waiting for "something" about the economy which I couldn't hear.

Let me know if you're interested in hospitals in CA.

The fact that your hospital has openings and hires new grads doesn't diminish the scope of the problem at all.

Our regional medical center has a vareity of openings and they, too, hire new grads. In fact, they just did. In the unit where I was performing my internship they hired 4 new grads... having their pick of over 150 applicants.

Another local hospital posted their new-grad program in L&D: 400 applicants for 4 positions. Another posting was for the NICU: I don't know how many applicants they received but they pulled the notice 5 days after posting it. Another posting this week that accepted new grads was pulled after two days, a likely indication of the overwhelming response.

It's not that there aren't any jobs... nobody's asserting such. It's that there are many too few jobs for all of the people who need them.

This bill is a travesty and Wexler should be ashamed of himself. I wonder how much money he's getting from the American Association of Immigration Lawyers and the American Hospital Association.

I went to this nurse executives web site. There are 9 positions open. All are for experienced nurses, doesn't seem like a crisis. Why not market to areas where there is a nursing surplus.

Heck, for the 40K to import nurses that would be a great sign on bonus.
