Let me be clear: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so ****** OFF right now. There are literally thousands of new grads, like myself, who are struggling ALL OVER THE U.S. who can't find jobs for the life of them. This is absurd!!

I have applied to over 30 jobs and cannot get a single call back. I have spent numerous nights sobbing in my bed because I can't afford my loans starting in December and might have to consider filing bankruptcy. :crying2::bluecry1::crying2::bluecry1:

And now, to hear that a Florida congressman wants to "import" foreign nursing to "combat the current nursing shortage" is more than I can take (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_2536.html). Are you serious? Pleas tell me you're JOKING!!!

Why did I foolishly even consider becoming a nurse in the first place (besides it being my childhood dream)? What a waste of time. :banghead:

I just can't take this anymore.................

HHHHMMMMM. Check out the want ads for the greater Detroit area. Lots of nursing jobs, hospital, nursing home, home care... Big bonus in Detroit, lots of affordable homes on the market!

I worked in home care with 2 RNs for whom it was their first nursing job. Currently working in hospice with a new grad.

Relocation may be the key for new nurses.

Which publications in Detroit should I check?

On Monster there are only two jobs for

When I became a nurse in 1996 we were told that ALL of us would have jobs by the time we graduated. NOT TRUE! There were many nurses who went without nursing jobs for some time. Now with all the nursing shortage complaints, I find out the real truth. There is a shortage of nurses who have good med/surg skills. At least that's what people are saying now. :banghead:

Hope you find a job soon. I do feel for you. Nursing school is a long, drawn out affair and then to not find a job along with student loans makes it even harder.

Not sure what you mean by "So?".....

Is that not a big deal to you?

Importing foreign nurses is obviously a huge deal. There aren't enough jobs to around as it is, and they're going to bring people from overseas? That just sounds crazy to me to the point where I don't even believe it.

Just another example of a politician who's completely out of touch with reality, trying to fix problems that don't exist so he can ignore real issues.

I doubt that it's a matter of being "out of touch with reality" -- I suspect (assume) it's more a matter of doing the bidding of his corporate benefactors ...

i have come to the realization that moving out of state may be necessary. i have discussed this with my husband and it seems i have no choice. he is ok with me moving away for a year and then come back. however, it seems that i am equally stuck because it seems that most states prefer to hire "in-state" residents over non locals. so if i can't get hired here...and i can't get hired there....then what do i do? it's not like i'm sticking my nose up at out of state jobs. as long as i get paid enough to make the minimum payment on my bills and can afford a studio where i relocate to, i'm fine.

do you see the issue people have with hiring "out of state" new grads..i mean you say right here that you want to leave in a year..do you know how much money and time go into training a new grad?? and to have that investment, which is exactly what it is an investment walk out 6-8 months later, is just not good business!!

i agree that there is no shortage, and importing more nurses will not help the situation at hand at all, and i certainly hope that you and the other nurses here find jobs quickly, but honestly i hope it is not in my unit, i do not want to train someone just to have them walk on me!

sure, i can completely understand why they don't do it. but, if it came to you filing bankruptcy or going somewhere for a year, what would you do?

not sure i get the "walk on me" statement.....i certainly would not be doing this out of spite or on purpose. i am doing it out of survival.

In 1996 I gave up wanting to be an rn. I completed all the prereqs in 1995. There were so many nurses without a job it was depressing. Just like now. We had 3 rns working as MA in our clinic.

I'm wondering if I could go back now and retake the prereqs. They haven't gone to waste. I was able to keep my science teacher position for a while with the 12- year old prereqs.

I question why they need to grant work visas at all. I read recently that 80% of Filipino immigrants that arrive on a yearly basis are able to come here because they have a sponsor (family, friends). How many of those are nurses? I don't know why this country can't have a more flexible immigration policy. When the economy is good, let in a few more. When it is bad, reduce the number. Yes, immigrants can make a country but they can also break a country if allowed entry without restraint.
