Oh, joy.
we are having hiring freezes also and I am worried about a layoff, for the first time in my life I bought a new car and now have car payments starting today. No car, no work but no work worries me. I am 52 and am not sure where I would go to find another job.
on the upside by the time my unemployment ran out I would find a job somewhere
I am sorry to hear they are laying off there. I just heard today that there is a hiring freeze at the hospital I used to work at and any staff who leave will not be replaced due to budget issues. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way.
The friend that I spoke with said they asked her if she'd consider early retirement.
How typical that they give notice of this so you can dwell on it over the weekend.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear. I hope you are not affected. I began picking up 6 days a week of work out of fear. Fear, one week I may not have the hours so get it now while I can and put it away. *sigh scary right now. Sending good thoughts your way.
I have been doing the same, in case times get scarce later. I have a four day weekend right now that I refuse to give up, because after this, it is overtime on med-surg as often as I can in order to catch up on old bills before there is nothing left.
I rather think your job in informatics should still be safe, The bright side, it is not like someone can fill your shoes in 6 weeks time. Last layoff I was ever in 20 years ago that is what happened. They went unit by unit cutting FTE's then everyone had to reapply for positions. Some at the low end of senority, or who's positions were cut on their own units applied to bump into other positions. The only catch was, one could bump a person out of their unit only if they could get up to muster within 6 weeks and thier seniority was higher. That pretty well kept anyone on a speciality unit safe.
I think you will be safe.
Where are you? In socal they are hiring, with some places offering 5,000 dollars to new-grad nurses and 10,000 to nurses with experience. hospitals around here can NOT get enough nurses. i'm still getting calls from recruiters, I got calls from two different hospitals within miles of me. maybe they could try relocating??
inland,
I can't move west. I have elderly parents and a schizophrenic sister here and need to be somewhat near.
I'm not worried about finding another job. I know I can get into the bigger hospital 60 miles south at better money, but that puts me back to the floor, shifts, and 2 1/2 hours of driving a day.
I really like this job. It's like it was made for me - geek nurse.
