is 25-30 too late to want to pursue a nursing degree?

I'm curious. I'm 22 but I'm struggling in anatomy and really don't know what else to do. I feel like maybe if I work a little bit and save up my money I can come back at another time and go back to school. I thought about becoming a cna?

I graduated from my ASN at 28. You'll be working till you are about 65 anyway! Do something you love!

Average age in my class is 34. I'm the second oldest at 40-mumblemumble. One of our instructors didn't get her RN until 50

Specializes in Nursing Education, CVICU, Float Pool.

Gosh no! The oldest classmate I have in my class was 51 when we started. She is the class VP and we are graduating this coming May! (Yay!) I completed an online diploma program in another field at this college. I went to the graduation and a 74 year old man walked across the stage, finally receiving his Bachelors degree. The whole auditorium have him a standing ovation! I am a firm believer that your NEVER to old to learn! Keep trying. I know people who struggled through A&P and some who had to retake it and they eventually made it through the courses and into nursing school, and are now amazing practicing nurses. Keep your head up! Never give up!

I've posted this before. Still true.

my oldest student was 63. she had been married for forty years to a man who told her she was stupid and worthless and never let her do anything she wanted to do, least of all nursing school. and when the old b****** died she took the insurance money and went to nursing school, bless her.

she was a typical student in some ways, except although she was new to nursing she was not new to life. in that she was years and years ahead of the 18-year-old chickies fresh out of high school who were her classmates. she had experienced the vicissitudes of life over decades, had raised kids, and so much else, so she could identify stressors and situations in patients, and they trusted her to listen to them more than someone whose hair wasn't already well along on its way to white.

another friend went to med school at 32. when people said, "you'll be forty by the time you finish!" she said, "i'll be forty anyway." good attitude.

good luck!

No! Not too old. I'm 27 and am finishing my first term of nursing school. When I graduate, I'll be 30. I am also pretty much the average age in my program. I think it's technically 29. This is a second degree for most people. So I say, yes, go for it!

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

to OP: I was 45 when I started. Once a nurse, always a nurse. I agree that saving money and working as a CNA could be a good choice. It has to work for you.

Specializes in School Nursing.

I'm 40 and in nursing school. There are a couple women older than me in my class, one is in her 50s, another in her 60s! :)

I'm 31 and finishing up my pre-reqs so I can apply to my school nursing program in the summer.

Specializes in Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant.

I am in my early 30's and my first year of practice. Definitely doable!! Only thing I grapple with a little is postponing starting a family while I am building my foundational nursing skills and expertise at the bedside. But I guess I'd need a husband first for that anyways ; )

There were many second career students my age and older. Go for it if that's what you want. Good luck!!

Definitely not. I am 31 and just entered the program. Assuming I pass, I will be almost 34 when I get my license. Good luck to you :)

Specializes in ER, ICU, Education.

Here's a decision tree. Are you dead? If so, it is too late. Not dead= not too late. Since you are posting, I will assume you are not dead! Seriously though, I've had successful students from ages 19-67. Success is more about perseverence, good coping skills for stress, support from outside when possible, and hard work. Some of my strongest students are returning students.

Hi! I am 19 years of age studyng also for Nursing. In my own opinion, age is not too late for pursue-ing Nursing Degree because as long as you have the capacity, determination, focus, time management, sharp thinking and critical thinker mind, nothng is impossible whether youre young adult

Or old.
