Ever wonder how/why some can even be admitted?
Maybe it's a small hosptial thing?
One of our Docs admitted an old guy with: Fear of back pain.
Does insurance even reimburse for that??

Our docs put ACUTE in front of everything. Makes it sound well.....more acute.
Try it....ACUTE fear of back pain. Sound better, yea right.
It's like when you read your fortune from a fortune cookie. Just end them all with...IN BED.
I guess we could do that for all DX too.
...fear of back pain IN BED
...Abd pain IN BED
...Chest pain IN BED
...Cephalgia IN BED
...Inability to ambulate IN BED..oops doesn't work there
...Intractable vertigo IN BED
...Failure to thrive IN BED....this one could be interesting
OH well can you tell I'm bored!!!

I had a 82 year old Failure to Thrive once! So lame!!!:chuckle
The Syncope ones always drove me nuts. Anytime someone over the age of 60 tripped on a curb....syncope. On had an admission note that read, "Syncopal after falling off bar stool"!:roll
Then there's the good ole' Change in Mental Status.

I had a patient in the 90's with dx of failure to thrive. Her daughter was constantly complaining, ranting and raving about everything (driving me nuts). The patient rarely said a word. If I had to return home with a daughter like that, I'd fail to thrive too.

"Failure to Thrive" is a legal dx. for the elderly. I read it in last months geriontological nursing mag. Same criteria as infants, #1 problem weight lost. #2 problem will not eat #3 withdraws from family/caregivers. etc.., happens frequently in convalescent homes. Just thought yall like to know.
