Kids doing this on purpose?

I have had some kids that done things on purpose, knowing they will get hurt, then getting hurt and coming to me that they got hurt. Makes me question their common sense.

Last time was the "Andy Challenge" and I had almost all of 8th grade coming down because they "Got hurt accidentally at PE." and instead it was because they fell on purpose and hit themselves on purpose. After I learned about this, I told them I would give them ice packs, but I will call their parents. They were so mad at me, but I told them, "You made your bed, now you will lay on it. I have no more ice packs, I ran out! If you are going to be doing this again, at least warn me next time so I can get a lot ready! But you know better, so I don't know why you did this." I gave their ice packs, and I called parents.

Now today, a 4th grader decided to staple their thumb because "They were bored". I gave them a lecture, then called their mom to let her know. They thought it was funny, I was like, you could of gotten hurt worse!

Do you have a story of this happening to you? I'm sure I'm not the only one and I hope I'm handling issues like these right.

I'd make the kid call their parents so I could enjoy that conversation from afar. Sorry you're having a tough time with these guys. Doesn't it scare you a little to know that they are our future? Our little lovelies have been throwing raw eggs on each other lately. So charming.

I have kids with anxiety and school avoidance who make themselves vomit. Little do they know that they are on a list and they do not get to go home unless they have other symptoms as well.

Let's see....the salt and ice challenge, the eraser burn challenge, the neck slap challenge, vomiters, press on your carotids till you get dizzy-but stop before you pass out. I'm sure there are more, but I try to forget.

I'm in an elementary school so no challenges thank goodness but I've got the ones that will vomit at a drop of a hat and another one that will pee on herself to get out of class - Mom takes forever to bring clothes and won't send any extra at school so she stays in my office until she dries.

I had a severely autistic, non-verbal child that new his father stayed home on Thursdays. Alarmed, freaked out bus driver would insist I get him off the bus - "he has vomited several times on the bus - he's sick, call his parents now." Really bus driver - I got this. When we figured out what was going on, we would clean him up and off to class. He eventually gave up the rouse. Even at this level they can figure out a way to get what they want.

I had various of chronic vomiters in my school. A lot of them stopped after the first few weeks of school.

One was this cute little black girl, so sweet and she loves me so much. But in the beginning of the year, she would keep coming in for vomiting. Mom would freak out at first, but then after this kept happening all the time, at the same time, I told mom it could be that's really nothing wrong with her, based on what she told me that once she got her, she would be happily playing with toys and not really sick at home. So since then, mom worked with me and when she came crying, we would call mom and send her back. After that it stopped and on christmas, I got a christmas gift from them saying thank you for my patience.

Then another one, she would throw up too a lot but recently. She would just say that she didn't like the taste of her lunch, so it grossed her out or that she thought of a gross thing and threw up. After this happened quite often and mother worried sick that the kid was allergic to something, nothing popped up from doctors. Mom said she would be normal at home after picking her up, I said it's possibly nerves. So since then we would call mom if she threw up again and send her back to class. Not any problems since then.

oh, i've survived many "challenges" from takis to cinnamon to eraser. Occasionally i'll call myself, sometimes i'll have the student call. I've had plenty of kids with sickness caused by behaviors or sheer desire to go home. We work through it, don't give in and the behavior changes. I try to educate my students a lot to make them understand things like vomiting from the spinny toy is not the same as vomiting from a virus.

Just recently had a Little Darling make his nose bleed, then report another student had hit him (3 times). He also come in with an old bruise and day old scratch complaining some one had randomly hit him and scratched him. After investigating (we have camera's everywhere) the administrators never saw the alleged assaults.

LOVE our cameras - Had a student say she was pushed by the water fountain outside resulting in a serious looking abrasion.

Camera results in:

Fooling around near fountain for a while, then tripped and fell on the sidewalk - no one around her.

Well I'm not a school nurse, but I used to be an elementary school student. I remember one day in 3rd grade when one of the boys decided to make DIY braces by wrapping a paperclip around his teeth. But then it got stuck and it wasn't so fun anymore!
