Kids doing this on purpose?

Published

I have had some kids that done things on purpose, knowing they will get hurt, then getting hurt and coming to me that they got hurt. Makes me question their common sense.

Last time was the "Andy Challenge" and I had almost all of 8th grade coming down because they "Got hurt accidentally at PE." and instead it was because they fell on purpose and hit themselves on purpose. After I learned about this, I told them I would give them ice packs, but I will call their parents. They were so mad at me, but I told them, "You made your bed, now you will lay on it. I have no more ice packs, I ran out! If you are going to be doing this again, at least warn me next time so I can get a lot ready! But you know better, so I don't know why you did this." I gave their ice packs, and I called parents.

Now today, a 4th grader decided to staple their thumb because "They were bored". I gave them a lecture, then called their mom to let her know. They thought it was funny, I was like, you could of gotten hurt worse!

Do you have a story of this happening to you? I'm sure I'm not the only one and I hope I'm handling issues like these right.

I have a doozy. So this student decided to bring those bambozzle beans (I'm not sure if I spelled it right). The ones that there's that challenge that you eat it and you might get something gross or something like that. So she decided to share her candy with the WHOLE CLASS during lunch. One kid got the misfortune to get the dog food flavor and THREW UP ALL OVER THE CAFETERIA. I had to run and get her to my office fast and call her mom. Parents were pissed and I had to bring admin into this. We learned that various of girls were involved, not just that girl who brought them, with this stunt and that they all decided to pass the candy around. We called them in, I talked to them that it could of been worse if she was allergic to the candy, they were ready to cry after we lectured them. We called parents and sent them back to class.

My kids love those gross things. I played ONCE and got skunk flavor. Never again.

In December, I had junior high boys poking and scratching each other with thumb tacks. I treated them for minor cuts/scrapes and charted "Advise student to never engage in this activity again. Student voices understanding" Admin called the parents since it became a discipline issue.

I had a fourth grader remove the blade from a handheld pencil sharpener and scratch his neighbor with it several times. That's some prison yard nonsense right there.

The kicker is that it came out in the wash that the friend ASKED him to do it "because it would be funny."

A few years back we had Little Darlings would walk into my office with black sharpie on their necks. When I asked questions they said the were playing Ninja Assassins. The goal of the game was to see if you could slash your targets neck. I put the breaks on that really quick when I went to the administration. I could just see having to dial 911 cause someone crushed a larynx. :ninja:

I'm scientific. I want to know the odds ratio on good flavors to gross ones before I decide.

Had a kiddo come in who thought he was dying. They had a pepper challenge in English class and he got the hottest pepper in the bag. Kiddo thought he was going to vomit and did not want to because it was going to burn coming back up. Then he said, "It's not going to feel any better coming out the other end either."

This is shedding some new light on my sudden rash of 4th grade boys with staples in their fingers. :sniff:

I think it is 1:1

I think it is 1:1

Statistics might show the ratio is 1:1, but you are almost 99% guaranteed to get the gross one. Just saying...from experience.

LOVE our cameras - Had a student say she was pushed by the water fountain outside resulting in a serious looking abrasion.

Camera results in:

Fooling around near fountain for a while, then tripped and fell on the sidewalk - no one around her.

Just wondering if the water fountain that pushed her got punished?

I was grateful for cameras when I thought I was in the hot seat once a couple years ago. Parents come in, upset (in a polite way) wondering why their daughter was seen in my office for a PE injury and they got no phone call. She was injured in first period PE, said I gave her ice and sent her on her way. She suffered all day and they took her to be seen and there was a fracture.

I could not, for the life of me, remember seeing this child and had not charted anything. Every once in a while something slips by- when we are busy and seeing a bunch at once, I may have done a less thorough assessment and treated conservatively. Since I forgot to chart, I forgot to get her back to my office for reassessment which I like to do for PE injuries.

So we had a meeting with me, the parents, the student, and the principal and I was feeling awful and apologizing for my misstep and that I couldn't recall any details when the principal said "Let's see the tape to see how long she was in the nurse's office" and the student broke down, sobbing saying she lied and had never gone to my office, never even told a teacher that she got hurt. The parents were very understanding and apologized for causing us undue stress.
