Kicked out by half a point

Hello! :)

I just wanted to state an issue that my sister had.

My sister had such bad luck when it comes to nursing school. When she got accepted she was the most excited that I have ever seen her. Too bad that, that in her old school they made the mistake of giving her the wrong catalog and she basically had to take all new classes because the new one did not pertain the classes she had completed. When this happened, she moved out of town and entered a nursing academy at a university. She was in a lot of nursing organizations and her professor always told her she was amazing in clinical (even saved a patient's life after noticing a nurse was going to give her the wrong medication). On the end of her nursing class she was completely stressed out in passing a test. She focused so much on that test and not on the other one. Well the test she was stressed about, she got an A but it was the other test, that she failed. She ended up being kicked out of nursing school by HALF a point. She still graduated school with a Psychology Bachelors because she was taken them as elective, because she thought they were "easy" and "interesting". But I know nursing is her passion. Right now, the university is no longer accepting nursing students that got kicked out back.

Also wanted to add that she needs two more semesters.

Anyone have any suggestions on what she could? Any advise? Did you go through something familiar?

That's odd, in my school if you fail a course you get a chance to make it up, but you have to wait til the next year when it starts up again.

That's a tough policy. Although there is a limit to retakes, we don't get kicked out of the nursing program for failing just one class. You can retake the course the next semester or whenever it is offered again. Is that the only class she failed? Is there someone she can go to talk to (director of the nursing program or dean) who might be able to offer some advice?

I have never heard of a program that dismisses you for failing a single class. Has she had academic warnings in the past?

She should read the student handbook and see what the shook policy is.

She should also start looking around at different schools. Some schools will accept students from other schools in mid-program. We had several students who failed another program come to our program and excel. It's usually on case-by-case basis though.

Mine did. Our classes were in order... A-B-C-D. You couldn't go from A-C-B-D so you fail one class and you're done. Some people had the option to resequence into the program, but they only allowed so many per semester, you had to wait a year and you were only allowed on resequence.

Our program is that way. If you fail (

Did she fail only 1 class? In my program we are only allowed to repeat a class once at most, and only 2 repeats total in the entire program. Also in my program, if you were 0.5 points away from passing, and the instructor felt that you had the potential and was hardworking, they do sometimes pass you. If nursing really is her passion i would suggest that she look for another program then, as difficult as it may be. But if she can see herself in the psychology field then she should by all means continue it. I'm sorry to hear about her situation, it really is devastating to work so hard for something like nursing, only to be crushed.

At my school, if you flunk out with a grade less than 70 (77 is a "C" the lowest grade you can get and still pass), you simply cannot re-apply, you're done. But if you flunk out with a grade better than 70 but not meeting the minimum, you have a chance to re-enter the program next year if there is space available.

Anyway, there are too many holes missing in this story.

In my program, you must maintain a 2.5 nursing GPA to remain in the program. The chances of being kicked out are decreased as the semesters progress. If you fail either class in the first semester, you're failed out and ineligible to reapply to the program since it would be impossible to have a 2.5 nursing GPA. 4.0's get you in, but they won't always keep you in because nursing core courses are a different animal. In addition, half point failures are not uncommon. I've seen and read about students failing by a tenth of a point. You meet the standard, or you don't.

Not to be mean, but prioritization of tests is her responsibility. And again, she didn't fail by a HALF a point...she failed by many points adding up.

That, and if we move the minimum standard for one student, where does it stop?

Okay, but I don't want to hear one complaint about the nursing shortage or staff to patient ratios. Have fun with your gate kept, abusive profession.
