What is your facility doing to keep experienced staff? I need ideas to give the management at my facility. What benefits do nurses that have been on the unit for years have to stay?
We should just close this thread right now, because right here is THE answer.
Pay raises would be nice. The pay of anyone with 15 years of experience or more was frozen for a couple of years because we "made too much money." (I didn't notice a cap on the salaries or bonuses of the suits however.) When our pay was unfrozen, we didn't get enough of a raise to keep us ahead of the nurses with five years less experience. Still haven't caught up.
Respect would be nice. Pretty sure the suits don't respect anyone but other suits.
Reduced floating, first dibs on vacation time and preferred holidays would be nice. Bidding into new schedule rotations based on seniority would be nice. I don't want to bump someone off their preferred rotation, but when one opens up I think the senior nurses should have first dibs to bid into it. Awarding seminars, preferred schedules, etc. based on seniority would be nice.
But no freaking pizza party serving only sausage or pepperoni pizzas on Ash Wednesday please.
Well, raising the pay of experienced nurses when they jack up the new grad start rate would be nice. It's insane that a new grad comes in making the same as someone with 10 years of experience. I see so much about retention, but the actions are all about recruitment and only recruitment.
