130k Student debt for Entry MSN worth it?

Published

I would like to practice one day and this would put me a year of schooling away from that, but I also think I would be happy being an ED nurse going through community college and taking an online bachelors for MUCH less.

I am stressing about this terribly to the point of considering dropping my seat before the quarter starts.

I know there are many nurses out there with similar amounts of debt.

How did you find peace with 100k+ debt!?

Thanks

No, totally not worth it! Do your research, and find a more reasonably priced program. Odds are that your first job, you will be working right along side ASN and BSN prepared nurses, making the same exact wage as them. You should not borrow more than you can expect to make in a year and I don't know any new grads, MSN or otherwise, that are pulling in $130,000 a year. There are much cheaper options that won't have you paying more in student loans each month than you do in rent. Good luck!

Good Lord NO!!

My Masters was less than 10K and that was stretching it over 5 years, so lots of extra semesters' fees.

Heck no! That's insane!

I doubt it's possible, especially if you've overspent - and what you're talking about is obscene overspending. There is no way, no remotely possible chance, that I would ever consider going into debt like that for a nursing education.

Don't do it.

This 130k of debt...do you already have some student debt and will arrive at this total after acquiring the masters...or are the programs you're considering to get there going to cost you 130k? Heck naw man NPs make more money but not waaaaaaay more money then even an ASN can earn with the right experience in certain jobs. I mean unless you're talking about becoming an anesthetist...definitely no.

Have negligible debt from undergrad. This is just tuition + living expenses over the next 3 years.

Nope, nope, nope. Don't do it. You'll never get out from under that debt. Seriously.

Sounds like the University of San Diego accelerated program. Beautiful campus, well-respected in the community and because it is private and monied, does have some benefits in the San Diego community because the people in the program are connected in the healthcare community. All that said, still not worth it, in my opinion.

Think of the decades of stuff you will not be able to do under that crushing debt load. Run the actual numbers. Then run- fast and far- in the opposite direction.

This is a crushing amount of debt on a new grad nurse salary. Have you crunched the numbers to see what your repayments would be? Can you afford living expenses, food, and $900 a month in student loans? You will be working a long time to pay this back.

I do not understand the point in going directly to Entry MSN when you have zero nursing experience. For one, such programs are super expensive. Second, many employers look iffy at you when they see you have MSN but zero clinical experience. Why don't you do an accelerated or a generic BSN? Get some experience and then decide what specialty you wish to practice.
