After what felt like forever, I just received my acceptance into the nursing program at Davenport University. I'm an older student (33) and have 2 kids and a puppy. I'm beyond excited for this adventure but I'm wondering if anyone else can relate to my situation and give me advice on how to get through the next four years!

Yay! Congratulations!
I'm 33 also (34 in March), and graduating in May. I have a 5 year old, and we're getting a dog soon. :)
Have you met anyone in your program yet? You may be surprised that you're not as "old" as you think. I'm right in the middle in my class, age-wise.
There's a pretty clear separation in our class, actually, the 20-somethings and the parents in the class. The younger ones call us the Momfia. Haha! The Momfia gets together for runs and for a beer after exams and such. It's quite nice! The oldest ones are in their 50s.
Do you have support to help with the kids and/or household stuff?

Congrats! I can totally relate. I am 34 (35 in July) am going thru a divorce and a single mom. He doesn't help with the kids. I moved in with my parents as they volunteered to help. I don't want to work because at his point I think would be too stressed. I am starting my ASBN program in a week and a half! No dog though as my parents don't like animals. Once I am done though! Good luck!

I got accepted too and starting JAN 13th.
Congrats to us, while I'm in my 20s, I have respect for older students who are pursuing their dream:)
Yay us! Let's get ready for the nursing school ride!

Hi, and congratulations! :-) I'm an older student as well- I just turned 30 back in June and just completed my first semester of my BSN program. I'm among several older students, but don't be afraid to befriend some of the younger ones because they can definitely help you along in areas you're not strong in. Good luck on your journey!

Just to comfort you, I'm 19, no kids, live at home and work part time.. and I am DEFINITELY the minority Most of my classmates are in their 30s, married, and have kids. You'll survive.

Don't worry... I am not an "older" student but I am an untraditional student and successfully completed my first semester of nursing school with 2 As and 3 Bs. (I am 22 and have a 1yo and 2 1/2yo) my advice to parents who are students is to be organized, study when u can (I study at school when I can and after I put the boys to bed), get the kids to help around the house if they are old enough, and every so often do something for you or you will go crazy. Good luck on your journey and my last piece of advice is to take it one day at a time. :)

I am a week away from my 36th birthday, have 4 kids, a dog, a cat, and a husband (aka kid no 5). I am also a few months shy of finishing nursing school. :) I chose an ADN program, because it is local, a great highly respected program, and the price was right as well! It has been quite the journey for sure, but totally doable. I did quickly give up the idea of having a spotless house however, haha. With the drive to do it, you can accomplish anything, it does mean some sacrifice occasionally, but in the end it will be worth it .

I love the support we all give each other. I remember when I first came on this site. You will remember this time also. We all seem to go through about the same process. Am I to young or to old? Married or single? Bsn or Asn? One thing is for sure if you ever need support you can get it here! When I started I was 33 mother of seven, married, not working, driving almost 2 hours to school. It has been a challenge for my family but I noticed that it is a challenge to everyone. Whether you are single or married, kids or no kids. Everyone will go through the stress of nursing school but hopefully you will have a supportive class that each member takes turns motivating each other. I know in my class it was definitely like a game of tag you are it! Good luck to you all and you can do it! As I sit here in disbelief that I am going into my last semester of nursing school, it goes by quickly!
