hi guys- i am a new graduate who has been searching relentlessly for a job with no luck. i am taking my boards in a week, and have focused my energy into studying and job searching. a graduate from the class before mine put in a good word for me with her manager, and her manager told her to have me send my resume. to make a long story short, hr in the hospital contacted me to set up an interview 2 days after i sent my resume and the hr rep said to me "there aren't any positions right now, but the director wants to interview you anyway". what does this mean??? i am really crazy over this because it is for the nicu which is what i have always wanted. i really want this job, but is there a job? i was just wondering what other nurses out there thought about this. i have an interview tuesday morning. thanks!

Congratulations! Both on your passing the nclex and the interview! :)
There is a big possibility that they may take you in. Be thankful for that. And what the hell, this is your dream area! So do you really have to think about going?!
Another scenario may be that they may offer you another position not as a staff nurse. Just a hunch since I have experienced this.
Either way good luck and show them what you've got!

This same thing happened to me, and the nurse manager told me that if a position does open, she would let me know.
Hint: Go on about how you have always wanted to do NICU and you feel like you belong there...blah blah blah lol.

I'm guessing that there's an opening now/coming up on the NICU which HR doesn't know about yet, or they're impressed enough so far to want to keep you in mind for the next opening.
You have nothing to lose by going on this interview...so go get them! :)

This happened to me as well. I went for the interview, and they said I would be put on a "waiting list"... and HR said that they might not be hiring for at least 3 months. 2 weeks later I got a phone call asking to come back for a second interview. Long story short, I got my dream job. Go for the interview, you never know what could happen! And good luck!!! :)

Good luck!
Thanks guys! I am definitely going- it is at 11:30 tomorrow morning. I bought a pantsuit, got a manicure, got my portfolio together, the whole nine yards. This is really important to me and I just hope that there is an opportunity and that they aren't just wasting my time (and money!)

So how did the interview go??????? Inquiring minds want to know.
The interview went really well. I was interviewed by HR and then the Nursing Director. Both were very nice. The Nursing Director took me to the unit and showed me everything which was really cool.
She maintained that they have no positions, but liked me enough to put my resume in front of all other resumes she had (which I watched her do).
I have a friend who works in the attached mother/baby unit who basically hooked me up with this interview who we saw towards the end of the Nursing Director showing me around. Her, along with another nurse, commented on how they really needed at least 1 more nurse around.
When I got home, I went on the website and saw 2 per diem spots listed for NICU at that very hospital. My friend who works there called me and I told her about this. She seems to think they may switch the 2 per diems into a full or part-time and offer it to me.
She advised me to send an email thanking the director for my interview, and wait a few days. She thinks something may happen so we will see! Thanks for all the advice and comments guys :)
